HP dv5000 mini review

Thread Starter
This is a mini review on the HP Pavillion dv5000 notebook PC. My wife purchased this notebook 2 weeks ago but I’ve been using it for the past 2 days and I have to say I am really pleasantly surprised by this laptop in a number of areas.
First the specs, it has a Core Duo 1.66GHz processor, 1GB of ram, an Nvidia 128mb go7400 video card and a 15.4” shiny (whatever HP calls it) display.
First I’ll talk about the display; it is absolutely brilliant and better than displays on laptops substantially more expensive, I'd say it's very close to the Sony Xbrite displays. Bright, sharp and colors are just beautiful, I’ve even used it outdoors and though it is shiny and you can get some reflections it’s easier to see than my other laptop with a matte display.
With the 1.66GHz Core Duo chip this laptop is extremely fast, yes HP loads a boat load of bloatware on it so I uninstalled everything that was not needed (I didn’t reformat) and it purrs like a kitten. It has Windows Media Center edition as its OS and it boots very quickly and apps load in no time. Also there is no lag when multitasking; running anti virus or other maintenance programs in the background produces no lag. It’s a very sleek looking machine and seems to be well built, it has a row of multi media buttons along the top which are in a nice blue color and it has a media direct button so you can listen to music through the excellent Altec Lansing speakers without booting into Windows. There is no creaking at all when opening the top, the only thing I find is a little flexing in the keyboard but it doesn’t feel bad, as a matter of fact the keyboard is extremely comfortable with big full size keys which are quiet and have good travel.
Another surprise is the battery life, I’d say it gets a good 2.5-3 hours of battery uptime and that is with the display at full brightness, it would probably do better with the display at a lower setting. I believe it has the 6 cell battery, HP makes a longer lasting 12 cell battery as well.
All in all for a $1,300 laptop HP has a winner with the dv5000. Downsides? Well as I mentioned the little bit of keyboard flex and it is kind of heavy. That’s not bad, 2 minor complaints. I’ve enjoyed it for the last couple of days!

dv5000 (t) ????

***

Beware that since you un-installed a bunch of stuff , instead of doing a fresh install there is still a bunch of extra stuff on your pc. Files scattered here and there... items left in the registry that can cause conflicts / problems later on.

I just got the 5000 turion version. Does anyone know is it possible to pop in an extra hard drive into this machine? And if I ran two drives in this notebook would it be a big hit on the battery power?
I have a Toshiba 5400rpm 16mb ide drive from my previous notebook and I am wondering if it will work with the new notebook.
TIA

No, you cant put another drive into the dv5000z. The double drive capabilty is only done on the dv8000z, which is the 17" laptop. It can fit only one drive.

I too have had mine for about 2 months and I have to agree it is a great machine. The only problem I have had is that one of the function keys came off but I was able to put it back on.

Are you having a problem with the ejection tab on the left side of the keyboard? Does it stick out and refuse to be pushed back into the machine?

i am considering custom ordering this laptop, however the website doesnt tell me what the bus speed is for the ram, anyone know the answer?

I'm planning on getting the 1GB (2x512), as the upgrade to 2GB (2x1024) is pretty pricey at $175.

You might want to take a look at the soon to be released dv6000, which is replacing the dv5000.

Has the new high gloss, scratch resistant lid, latchless lid, touch sensitive medial buttons, etc. and a simply beautiful design!

if you can wait, you'll end up with a laptop that's just been released with a brand new design, and all the features that the dv5000 currently offers!

thx! do you know when the dv6000 is coming out? I need to get the laptop before mid august. Also how much will it be? Right now a custom dv5000 or dv8000 is quite a deal at costco. Will there be a similar replacement for the dv8000 as well? The Geforce 7600 on that model is really tempting me.

Costco Rocks

Colagent-- I got a 5000t from Costco. It was labeled dv5237cl.

Absolutely WOW!

But if you want a game machine..go elsewhere.

Mine has:

2g memory, 1.83Gz, Duo Core, 120 GB HD, DVD-RW, abg wireless, 6-1 reader

My screen display with the glossy brightview...is INCREDIBLE..beyond words
I get 5hr on 12 cell battery watching DVD
Keyboard is sweet....not mushy, slight click...
touchpad is like sony with corase feel
speakers is loud and clear

If you like to keep 30 window open with no crash, run backup or virus upd while surfing...... this machine is heaven.

1.83gx duo core is fast.

If you want 64bit or Vista Aero...then goe elsewhere

Don't settle on single core. Go for 1.83 and up. 1.83 is sweet.

Costco has 6 month return policy..no questions asked with receipt....

Land or costco.com
