weird non-wireless network has become wireless?

i have a non-wireless (all wired with wires) network at my house that has 6 computers sharing the internet on it. recently i just got my first laptop (dell e1505) and it somehow detects my internet and im able to connect to it. and NO its not my neighbors internet because i checked ip and its same as my house...and plus i can find my neighbors too

now my questions are
1. how in the world did my laptop detect my house's internet when i have no wireless routers and just nothing wireless?
2. if its connected to my house's internet...why is the speed 4x slower than my house's internet?

what IP did you check - the internal NAT IP network range or the external "real IP" ?

what did you use to get a 4x speed test slower?

hows the rest of your house setup - wired router(s) and or switch(es) infront of 6 machines.

i checked the "real external ip" not the internal lan/router ip by going to whatismyip.com

i used online speed tests and my max download went from about 800kb/s (desktop) to 200kb/s (laptop) or even lower

i have a cable modem that hooks up to a linksys router that hooks up to a small hub/pub...no switches or anything

Is it even possible that you are using the DHCP feature on your neighbor's wifi network (thus connecting automatically), and using the wired network at the same time? I mean, that way, of course you will connect to your home network and to your neighbor's network.

People do stupid things sometimes (God! I do all the time), and since you didn't tell us, answer this: are you connecting the cable at the same time you are "detecting" your LAN? I know this is stupid, but as I said, I do things like this and I see this all the time (and don't know your depth of knowledge). If this offends you, sorry.

Also, no way your neighbor may be hardwiring your connection, right?
