Gateway 7525 sound crackling

Hi there,

I'm new here, but I searched the forums trying to see if there was anything about this. I've had my mx7525 for about 3 months. After the first couple, I found that anything that involved HDD access was going much slower than expected, finally to a point that copying a 100 meg file took about 10 minutes. I had backed up most of my data and defragged, but the drive seemed to be failing. I also noticed that any video playback was encountering major problems with the video being jerky and the sound crackling.

So, I contacted Gateway and they sent me a new HDD. I got it installed, ran the system restoration DVD, deleted all the crap I didn't want, updated Windows and put on about half a dozen necessary programs. This was about a week ago.

While my drive speed isn't seeming to have any problems yet, I've found that my video is beginning to get jerky again. Additionally, sound has already begun crackling again. This is true for any sound - even with nothing else running, if I adjust the volume through the system tray icon, I can hear a crackle as it sounds its little beep. Occassionally there will be a small "pop" or some other sound instead of the volume change beep.

I ran the Media Center setup that includes a short video (4 friends watching tv and playing pool). The video itself ran ok, but the sound was just full of this crackling, popping and static.

Anyone else having this issue? Any advice?

Thanks!

The 7525 has the Conexant AC/Link Audio. It has the latest driver that I can find from Gateway. I just installed it last week on the brand new hard drive.

i see that they have 2 drivers set at their download site, have u tried them both?
1. date 10/2005, 1390kb
2. date 01/2006, 702kb
i would do the 1st one first and then the 2nd one on top. Conexant is known for "crackling", not just gateway but hp as well

check to be sure that the sound card hardware acceleration - must be ON - on this as well.

cheers ...
