Desktop picture is stretched - PLEASE- how do i unstretch it?

Hi. If someone can help me out - that would be super marvelous!

I have just bought a Compaq Laptop - widescreen

However, the picture I have on the desktop is very stretched. THe people in the picture are short and stocky.

Even when I go to 'my display' and I change the setting - nothing will change it. When i choose the 'center ' option - the picture is big (fits the whole screen), fits the screen and is not stretched, however, only one section of the picture is shown. Same as when i choose ' tile'. When I choose ' stretch' - the picture fits the whole screen however is very stretched.

How do I fix this please? This is a massive emergency.

Thanks sooo much!

Amy

That's not a problem with your computer. What you need to do is to modify your picture with a Photo Editor.

Edit the size of your picture, make it match the resolution oy your computer's screen, and the problem will be fixed.

That's strange, because when you use "display properties" and center it, not stretched, it should work? Try rebooting. Mine did that too at first, then I rebooted and tried again and it worked. If all else fails, you can do what is suggested in above post, make the pix the same resolution as the frame, usually the width, or the longer of the two, width or height. For an example if it is a portrait and the height is more than your resolution of 900 then you would want to make the pixs height 900 pixels to fit. Or if it is under 900 and the pix is longer than 1400, then make the pix at that 1400 resolution.

You might check your video card settings that it isn't set to make everyhthing fit to the screen. I run into that on games but who knows maybe it happens on wallpapers too lol.

Do I change the size of ALL my pictures?

Hi to everyone who replied!

This forum is excellent - thank you all so much!

So, does this mean I have to change the size of all my pictures if I want them on the desktop without looking stretched?

ALso, if possible - what function do I use to change the size of the picture on Photo Editor?

Thanks everyone!

It can't just be the size of the picture, because I had a picture set as my desktop display and it looked fine.  I changed to a different one, however, and then tried to go back to the one I originally used, and it is stretched all out of whack.  It's something with the settings, but I can't figure out what is wrong.

He tried those already, QHN, it's in the first post however vaguely. I am wondering, just off the top of my head, if it's the WHOLE desktop or JUST the wallpaper? That much is not strictly clear from all of the above.

IE are the Task Bar and the icons behaving that way as well? Or no? If that's the case it could be a resolution issue.

If it's not, depending on the origins of the laptop (used vs. new), and the version of Windows in use, it could be a Group Policy thing? If it's running Windows 7 Home then that won't be the case, but I'm just trying to come up with ideas here.

Well it could be because of the Graphic Driver that is not installed properly! :S
