What is the benefit of this processor as opposed to the FX60?

There is not a lot of info out on the New Opteron 185 mobile CPU yet, but what I have found is the FX 60 is a single to dual core where the Opteron 185 is a true dual core. The FX 60 has L2 cache of 2MB The Opteron 185 has L2 cache 2 MB (1 MB per core)
From the bench marks on the workstation CPU the Opteron 185 is performing about 37% faster than the FX 60.
This CPU will run you $174 more than the FX 60.
I have built my machine with all of the bells and whistles, and not really planning on doing much upgrading for awhile.

The Wattage of the FX 60 is 89w and the 185 Operton is 110w. I'm assuming this will mean that it will run even hotter right?

Does this mean it will also run louder?

Does this imply that the FX60 has up to 2MB of cache for whichever core is active? In other words, they both have 2MB of L2 cache but does the Opteron have a dedicated 1MB for each core?

What is the benchmark? Was it for a multithreaded application, video editing, gaming? Do you have a link?
I have bought all the bells and whistles too, so the extra cash is not that much, but 37% seems quite a bit faster, so I'm interested to know in what areas does this speed increase pertain.
Thanks.

I spent about two hours this morning going through AMD site plus doing searchers on Yahoo. The benchmarks I got was on AMD site but it took a little bit of searching. They have not put out a lot of info yet.
I am not sure how the FX 60 manages the cache that would be for a Tech to answer.
I do not think that it will be loader. The CPU does not make any noise; it is the fans so I do not think it will be any loader.
Will it run hotter; I would say it will, any time you get more speed, means more heat.

Yeah I can't find much on it either and the FX 60 has done so damn well on the benchmarks that I am reticent to leave it just because the Opteron is available without some good proof. We need more information!!
My main concern is: if it is faster, is it faster at everything or certain things, like serving and so forth? I do video editing and gaming; is it faster for those types of applications?

I am gone for a couple days and you go and change your system. What's up with that?

Interesting note - I thought the FX60 was dual core. I must have missed something on that somewhere. Oh well.

That being said, again, congrats and can't wait to see the final paint job!

It is.
That is why I am so confused.
The FX 60 has outstanding benchmarks, so I'm not sure what the difference is between it and the Opteron.
Why is this so hard to uncover?

Phew.... I thought I was missing the boat somewhere, and I hate it because then I have to wait atleast another 45 minutes before the next one comes around.

Oh well - I guess soon enough we will have specs on the Opteron as well.

"The new series - 185 (for one-way systems), 285 (up to two-way) and 885 (up to eight-way) - are not revolutionary, but demonstrate that AMD is still able to scale its Opteron platform."
One way? Two way? Como?
What about the FX 60? Two way or one way?
My guess for the lack of information is that the Opteron series has mostly been designed for and targeted to the server platforms. The FX-60 was primarily for the general consumer market. That being said, I am sure the Opteron will give a great amount of perform in some areas of the FX-60 but will only moderately beat out the FX-60 in others. Is it worth the extra $170+ price jump, not in may humble opinion. But thats me.

How is your 185 Dual Core Laptop?

Hi there,
I was wondering if you have received your Opteron 185 laptop and how is performing? I am interested to do the same order myself
Thanks

If you are talking about DragonKing, he has not - in fact, he has decided to reconfigure the system, and if I am correct, he is going with the Intel version - EX7.

Not sure if others have received an opteron.

Akissy,
Not long after I ordered the 185 Dual Core, I changed back to the FX 60 due to it is better for gaming. If you are looking at doing a lot of work type stuff on your machine than the 185 is good, but if you are into gaming than the FX 60 is the better choice.
Like ratmyr said I have reconfigured from the FX7 to an EX7. I made this change due to the amount of problems others have been having with the FX7 mother board and memory problems. I live in Germany and did not want to be sending my machine back and forth.

dual core realy dont do much for games right now.....game developers havent written or coded their sofyware to utlize that technology yet ....just as the P-4 with HT realy dont perform like it could for the same reasons....but with HT you can play a game and if you virus scanner starts you wont see any glitches in performance , where as with the P-4 with out HT I always disabled my anyvirus software cause when it kicked in I would see it ...the game performance would drop .....I remember back in the windows 95 days that some MOBO's would take 2 seperate CPU's....

Thank you "Dragon King". You are right, I never had played any gave in my life. I need a mobile WORKSTATION. I am writting and executing simulation software for chip design and such. I want to find a machine which is stable, ultra fast in Flotting point calculations, fast system calls, Linux OS, WUXGA display for multiple file simultaneous editing and marginal graphics.

Is anybody there who could suggest any such machine. Cost is not an object. I wanted also to be mobile.

Thanks for your help
akissy
