Hi,
As a rather seasoned computer professional its kind of embarassing to have ask for suggestions but here it goes.
The number of notebook choices is rather overwhelming. I've always built my desktop machines myself from scratch, but now with the purchase of a notebook, I just don't have the time or patience to wade through everything to try and make an informed decision. So I'm hoping some of you around here can offer suggestions.
I'm looking for something that isn't too large, and will fit my needs with a budget of about $1000. This machine will hopefully weigh less than 6lbs, and have a screen of about 14". I pretty much have decided that it needs a dual core cpu, 1GB of RAM and 80GB of disk. The machine will be used while travelling, and its duties will primarily be web browsing, email, backing up photographs from digital camera, burning cd/dvds, running Photoshop. Additionally I will probably at sometime in the future be forced to do software development on this machine for the job. But that will not be a requirement very often.
I've zeroed in on the Dell e1405 as something that is pretty close to what I'm looking for. I've got it configured as above, with a 3yr warranty for about $1001 (not including tax). I need to get at least 2 years of life out of this machine so a 2 year warranty is a minimum.
So my question is, what else do you guys suggest that I consider? I've seen some people complain about the Dell's case being a bit cheap, and others complain about customer service. I really want a machine that will be reliable, and as user serviceable as possible. I've heard good things about Asus machines, but they're out of my price range, also I don't know how reliable an extended warranty from a small dealer would be.
Are there anythings you can think of in the same class that are competitive?
Thanks,
Derek
