On the 10th I ordered my e1705 with a 7800 go.. only to find a few days later I could/should have waited for a 7900 gs
. I spent 5 (FIVE) hours being transferred and put on hold and hung up on talking to many supervisors and getting many many many reference codes and pretty much ruining my day.. finally getting them to agree to accept my laptop back without charging me the restocking fee and them covering the shipping.
I had one person in the warranty department tell me and verify after checking that it was possible to have someone from dell come to replace my video card.. but pretty much everyone else while saying it was possible would not tell me how much it would cost or how to do it. Most of the people said I wouldn't be charged shipping or any fees, some did. They all said that even though it's a new system etc and nothing's really wrong with it (except screen leakage.. rar..) that it'd be best and cheapest for everyone for me to return it.
My concern was coupon codes, though.. At the time I used a $100 off 2000 and a $750 off 1999.. putting my system at a reasonable $1686 for a T2500, 60gb 7200rpm, upgraded screen, 7800 go.. and a four year warranty. I'm really in between on the warranty, but I've NEVER owned a laptop before, and I plan to keep this one a long time.. so I'd probably be best keeping the warranty.
Anyway, my reasoning for going through all this hassle is obviously to get the 7900 GS... less power drain, more performance.. duh! But my goal was to only have to spend the raw $118 more it cost to upgrade to it instead of my 7800.. as if I'd done it in the beginning. This has been very difficult, but currently it looks like I'm only missing the $100 off 2000 coupon.. I can't seem to find it or it's expired now.. This puts me around $250 more than I originally spent plus at least two weeks more without my laptop that I love so much.. hehe.
Since you guys've been talking about light leakage and dvd drive loudness.. I checked what I've got now.. NEC burner, Samsung display.. Fair amount of leakage, but it hasn't bothered me yet.. though I haven't watched movies on here yet, just games.. so..
I have noticed the drive is really loud though, and it sounds like you said the NEC's are the good ones? Ack!
My last concern is thinking that maybe later on I could just upgrade my video card seperately on my own.. but would this void my warranty or be cost prohibitive? I'm a stingy bastard as it is, so that'd be a factor. OH AND HI, new to the forums.
