Hey everyone, havent been on the boards lately...im one of the origional Gen 2 guys and am wondering how many of you have switched and upgraded from the 6800 ultra and how happy you are with the decision. What is the best option for upgrading and whats the price? I saw the 7800 for about $250 not long ago on here but whats the new hype for the price? Thanks a lot guys.

I also still have a 6800 ultra and am thinking of upgrading. The price now is 365 ish if you buy from members on the forum, I think dell charges 425, but you would cancel the tech installation so it would come out to around the same price.

It wont fit unless you plan on doing modding to the laptop.

So what links can be provided for this 7900gtx upgrade?
at this time, Gen2 and 9300 users face SERIOUS modding to upgrade to the 7900GTX, however the 7800GTX is a plug and play upgrade.
do a search in the forums, the 7900 challenges being discussed already in numerous threads.

i might put in a 7800gtx towards the end of summer
my 6800U owns my desktop's 9550

be very aware that the 7800 GTX's will most likly NOT be around by the end of the summer. There are only 3 people selling them on Ebay right now. I am one of them and also sell them here for less than my ebay auction. but I can tell you that dell went from having 20 at a time available for sale to having less than 3. Nvidia no longer makes the chip, Dell is no longer buying any new and as I said refurbs are comming to a fast end.

the 7900GTX will not fit or work in the XPS Gen2 because of bios limitations nor will it work in the 9300 or the M170 and there is no real way to rewrite the bios or flash a core duo bios as its completly different.

Hmmm... maybe I should now consider upgrading my 6800U? Whats the card? Is it a Go 7800 or a Go 7800GTX? Been awhile since I paid any attention to the upgrade talk for Dell lappys.

Lol wish i had saw that before i bought it. Oh well. Will it be a drop in upgrade to my 9300 with 6800 ultra in it??

from what i gathered when the 7800gtx was released was that its a marginal 10-20% bump over the 6800ultra. so i didnt go for it. ill prolly buy a whole new lappy with dx10, merom, blueray etc etc. early next year i guess.

No the go 7800 gtx is more than a marginal upgrade to the 6800 ultra. Do some searching for game benchmarks, it is a pretty big boost, especially on demanding games like fear, cod 2 and oblivion.

And let me say that I went from the 6800go to the 7800GTX. HUGE difference. You will not regret that upgrade.

6800go to 7800gtx IS a big difference. and from benchmarks i did see a big difference between the performance of a regular 6800go and a 6800ultra. just not too much between the 6800ultra and the 7800gtx that I would care about. again 10-20% depending on the game. some people might want the absolute best and thats totally fine. but i was like why replace a totally fine video card. the 7900gtx i would jump on. but thats not possible and my cpu might be a limiting factor.

CPU would probally be a lot less of an issue than memory or the video card.

I went from a ATI x300 to the 7800gtx, and let me say I have seen the light. From playing Fear at lowest settings to highest, playing BF2 on something other than low settings (I heard high might be asking too much). If you have the 6800 ultra, it probably isn't worth the upgrade, but if you have the 6800 go or the ATI x300, do it, do it now.

ya i went from a 5650go in the dell 8600, which some say was not a stellar line of products from nvidia at that time (5 series), to the 6800ultra. big difference.
