Which Screen to Pick?

Hey guys, new to the forums, though not to computing.

I am probably going to purchase an Inspiron 8600 shortly and am decided on everything except the screen. I know LCDs are different than desktop CRTs and thats my problem.

Budget it not a problem but I am the type of guy who uses a 1024x768 resolution on my 19" CRT, so would there be any point on getting anything other than the WXGA Screen? I know about the problems with the WSXGA+ so thats why I had originally picked the WUXGA. Do you think I will be fine if I just increase the font size with the WUXGA? I know it is a beautiful screen but I don't enjoy small fonts so that is why I use such a lame resolution on my desktop.

Otherwise its going in a
1.7Ghz PM
512mb Ram
60gb 7200rpm HDD
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

Should be a sweet system Also on a sidenote.. do you think this notebook would be ok for a college student to carry around? I understand it is big, but not too big like the Sager's or AW's and this has similar performance, best of both worlds I'd say, along with battery life.

Thanks,
Rob

If you're using a 1024x768 on a 19" monitor, you should be fine with the WXGA screen *lol* It's got a resolution of 1280x800, so you'd have more on the screen anyway

As for the weight, I can't say first hand yet, however the weight would be about 3.5-4kg to carry around. Some people it won't bother em, some people it will. I'd recommend a backpack carry bag though.

Go the M60 if money is no object then slip in the Radeon 9600 later or hopefully the 9700

Anybody else have anything to add? Also I might be doing some video editing so would it be worth it to upgrade to 1 gig of ram over 512? I would buy the stuff @ newegg tho for less $$

I have the WXGA screen and if the resolution was any higher, I would be struggling to read anything on the screen. As far as the issue for carrying it around, I am a college student and I carry my I8600 around in my targus backpack and it's fine, just a little heavy with books in there too.

I also have the WXGA and the resolution is Great. Its a Samsung and very crisp. I also am used to the desktop at 1024 so 1278 is fine. I loved the eye candy of the UXGA but I felt I would soon tire of the small everything and would, like my desktop CRT, run it below spec most of the time, and from what I have read (not experiencd) When you do run at a lower than spec's resolution the quality of the displayed information suffers.

Use the savings for the better V Card if you want the best option for gaming If you don't anticipate a lot of maxed out gaming the 5200 is fine.

I do viideo editing on my config . Its great for that as well. I upgraded to 768 RAM. Thats plenty as I already have a 256 stick Im not using. I don't think 1 GIG is worth having 512 MB in a drawer and the price for 1 stick of 512 in the Dell is not worth another 256K of RAM iIMO.

The WXGA and WSXGA from samsung is brighter than the WUXGA versions if thats also a deciding factor

I use the same res on my home pc as you and have the WUXGA. it does take some time to adapt but it is a great screen.

Dell, I find your statements a little confusing on the brightness. Are you saying that only the Samsungs are brighter??? I have used a Dell 8600 Sxga and it is not even close to the WUXGA. Are Samsungs that great???

Im sorry i was under the impression you had a samsung. The SHARP WUXGA is the brightest screen in the inventory of dell but is probably plagued with the white glow on the bottom from what i hear the hitachis are the poorest of overall quality
