Overclocking and voltmoding 7800 go

I've been doing some testing with a few differnt drivers, the results arnt to comprehensive because I'm not particularly patient, I've found the ceiling for my card at 1.1 volts, but before I move on I just want to be perfectly clear about a few things.

Will increasing the voltage get rid of artifacts?
Is the limit to how far I can OC thermal? As long as I dont get artifacts could I OC as long as I can keep the temperature in check? Or is there a risk of damaging the gpu at 1.3v and high clock even if youre within the threshold temperature?


Here's some of my 3dmark06 (default settings/resolution)scores with some diff drivers
laptopvideo2go 87.08
250c658......... 2168
366c937m...3066 82C max temp, no artifacts (this was the max clock i could set)

laptopvideo2go 87.25
371c956m.....3119 74C max temp minor artifacts on ps3 tests (max clock possible)

XG 84.56
250c658........2155

dual core t2500, go7800, 512mb 667mhzddr2 (more coming in the mail from ebay), 100gb 5400rpm


Will opening up the laptop to put AS5 on void the warrenty?

Voltmodding is done by changing the hardware, what you probably mean is Bios modding.
The 7800Go is seriously limited by the cooling capacities of the 9400.
Increasing the voltage means less artifacts as long as the temp stays within borders. if it becomes too high thermal throttling will interact.
But to prevent the risk of permanent damage or reduced lifetime, try to stay below 75C.
Any change to your laptop, including AS5 will of course have some risk of voiding the warranty.

IMHO and experience, it's just about impossible to stay below or even at 75C... not even at stock frequencies... unless you're sitting idle in windows my average temp is around 82-85 when gaming..

hmmm not really.. what I mean, you can run the 1.3vmod with your 90W psu, but you won't be able to go much above 420/950 without shutting down your 90W psu...if you plan on trying frequencies higher than this then you definetly need 130W. Undervolting the cpu also helps.. since I did mine, my 90W psu hasn't shut down yet.. but the again I'm running a conservative 415/950 while gaming... even at these frequencies, the heat generated is just too much to handle for the stock cooling of the 9400..

Hokay, I just flashed the 1.2v bios and set the clocks to 450/950, my 3dmark06 score (default settings): 3571! (87.25 laptopvideo2go drivers)

I havent tested extensivly, but 950 is about as far as my ram runs smoothly will go with the vanilla bios, 959 in the nvidia controll pannel, but I get some artifacts.

The core would go as far as 479 before the 'test failed' happens when OCing in the nvidia controll pannel.

When I tried running the 2nd round of 3dmarks06 at 460/950 i9kfangui started acting up and the fans started slowing down, I tried using various settings like max speed, direct controll (with and without "maintain fan speed"), automatic and temperature controll, but every time the fans slow down after the 1st test. I know i9kfangui isnt "working" on dual cores, but the beta 3 seems to be working fine except for the aforementioned problem. I did get 1 test at 460/950 it turned out even lower: 3396!

Right now I havent put on any AS5, and I'm not using any additional cooling, at 450/950 the gpu hit 80c on the 2nd and last test.

Andre, when you took off the stock cooler how much space was there between the heatsink and the gpu and ram when you remove the stock thermal pad? will a layer of AS5 be enough or do I need to get a thin sheet of copper or aluminum between the gpu/ram and heatsink?
