Linux Distro for developer and office productivity - Page 3

I bet if god ran out of the CD drive when Myah OS ran on your system you still would say you didn't like. Gentoo Guy cann't be pleased.

I am not a gentoo user, but i love gentoo for what it is and give high props to those that can make it work properly, i'll admit that i have never yet totally made a 100% normal gentoo system, every time i tried i screwed up somewhere. so instead i am using Arch linux which is binary, but still optimized for speed so i don't have to suffer with the craptasticness of i386 no fancy cpu feature support builds on all other distros. why would i use a distro that does not use 100% of all the performance-enhancing features my CPU offers like SSE, SSE2, MMX, and 3DNow! You know?

By bloated i meant 2 things. 1 that most every HOME USER will not use the comlete development suite that you pride myah on having, and 2 on the fact that you have like 10 media players installed. in my book you need 3 media players, either BMPx or XMMS for audio, Totem-Xine for video/dvds, and mplayer for everything else and firefox plugin.

its the same question as to why have epiphany, konqueror, firefox, and opera installed as web browsers when you can only have opera and firefox, since epihpany also uses gecko but lacks the useful extensions firefox has, and konqueror is just SLOW)

in fact, here is a list of included packages on my system to show you how i like my things done.

first lets get the base stuff out of the way:
kernel : 2.6.16 xorg: 7.0 gnome: 2.14.1

now for applications list:
------music and video------
Beep Media Player 2 (BMPx) (for audio)
MPlayer (firefox plugin)
Totem-Xine (for video)
RealPlayer (proprietary formats)
Rhythbox (online radio/library management)

---graphics----
Eye of Gnome (file viewer)
The GIMP (editing)

---internet----
Epihpany (backup just in case firefox fails)
Firefox (general browser)
Gaim (IM client)
Thunderbird (email)
XChat (irc client b/c gaim's irc features suck)

----office-----
openoffice 2
adobe reader

----games-----
enemy territory

thats it. those are all the programs (except for system tools which are part of gnome) that i need. notice not 10 media players, web browsers, photo editors, just one, or in case of firefox and epihpany 2 of each.

Ok sorry for the digg I made on you. But really if you did have trouble with my os you should have sent me an email or something.

Yeah I don't need the whole KDE suit but I like having it there for me to play with. Because at the end of the day it's not just for everyone else but it's on os for me to use.

I have to sleep now. It's been fun although i wish it wasn't so much arguing. It doesn't every accomplish anything in the end.

All I can say is that anyone that tries to brake away from the Windows hold is doing good in my book.

I like streamtuner never tried rythem box before. I also add in the mplayerplug-in with greasemonkey and PKLaunch because I like to watch music videos. I don't use totem though I think it's on my system. I like mplayer and xine for DVD's. I also have a large selection of games because some one told me linux couldn't do gaming so I tried to find every fun game out there and package it for download. I also ported some myself that I could find engins for and modify there data files. And just anything. Lot's of quake mods and other things. But I don't even play games much. Just wanted to make the packages for those who do like games but don't have lot's of money to buy them. Try 2.1 when the public torrent is ready see what you think of it. It should be a couple days.

I like Enemy Territory but it's the mod True Combat Elite that is really good. I will have the download for all of that on my site tomarrow.
when are you going to upgrade to modular xorg7 ? also can i assume you're gonna have fglrx 8.25.18 put into 2.1 so that people with X700 and similar cards get better support?

and btw, when you said the only reason i dont like kde is because the people who put it together did a poor job. thats not really true. I think Texstar did a hell of a job on it for PCLOS.... I think I figured out why I dont like it though, it looks too toylike (i know you can change themes blah blah blah) but by default QT just looks more like a toy. Gnome on the other hand, alhtough it takes a more somber approach to things, in my opinion the end result is more professional lay out and smoother lines.

and yeah, tried True Combat, it was good, but i prefer the original ET.

Wow, this is one of the most entertaining threads I've read here in ages. Myah, you should know better than to dis us Gnomers.

And then to suggest that Ubuntu is just Debian unstable??? Sacrilege.

Yep I picked up on that one

I figured I would see how long it took to notice.

Happily Crazy.

thats what gets me. he seems to argue installing everything that can humanly fit on 1 cd is the best way to go. when us crazy gentoo people would rather see things stripped, prelinked and -02 (maybe even -03) optimized and have 1 app per task config. to each his own i suppose.....
Personally I have run across some instability in some things with -O3 that makes me lean toward -O2 for most of my packages nowadays... I should start trying them out one at a time with -O3 to find out what the problem packages were sometime, just dont have time to right now, I have to much work to do when I am near my linux machines, and at the moment I am halfway across the continent for other work for a few months from my linux box(Obviously not strictly audio work this time, otherwise it would be with me

I've only delt with powerful hardware on my linux systems so I never even tried -03, but prelinking is a must on a linux desktop. Openoffice loading in 3 seconds is a thing of beauty.

Hmm I am curious, can you go into more detail on pre-linking? I dont think I have ever dealt with it, or at least not known the name of it when I did Seablade

i tried gentoo again today... failed horribly, so gonna use the 2nd good source distro out there: source mage. finished the core install, but since its binary, i am currently rebuilding all the packages to match my optimizations (prelink, comrelock, -02, strip, amd64_32) so its gonna be an uber sweet FAST sh*t when its done. after its done rebuilding the base, gonna have to do xorg (sadly 6.8, modular not yet supported) and xfce (i'd love fluxbox or e17, but they are too bare for me) of course building OOo2 from source is gonna take a while....
HehHeh have fun with sourcemage, I almost tried that one out before gentoo... decided to go with gentoo and am glad I did

Funny thought just struck me though, between all of those of us that spend a fair amount of time lurking these folders and helping folks, the majority of us all have used Gentoo in one form or another, and think it is one of the better options out there for advanced users, and probably at least half of us run it ourselves on a regular basis....

But Ubuntu is still the most reccomended I think.

Says something for that distro I suppose

the closesed i ever came to actually RUNNING gentoo was when i had VLOS1.1 installed on my desktop, that lasted about 1/2 year. i ran ubuntu much longer than that. but yeah, the fact that ubuntu is the most recomended really says something about its quality, also about what kind of people ask for suggestions. what i am saying is that mostly NOOBS ask for suggestions, and the best suggestion for noobs is ubuntu just because stuff works. gentoo on the other hand, being the best for advanced users... nothing works out of the box, hell, it doesn't even install "ready to go" but....you know...oh well.

Here's a couple resources:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=74197
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/prelink-howto.xml

It simply allows programs to load quicker. I noticed a big difference with VMware, OpenOffice, Gimp, Blender, Bluefish. Really makes the OS seem snappier. Your mileage may vary.
See I am curious on the specifics of this now... in particular what the prelink program actually does(AKA What the 'prelink' is) Yes I know it changes the exectuable to link it, but my question is, how is this different, or better, than doing a statically linked compile so that each program is statically linked against its libraries? It would seem to me to be very similar at least and I would be curious as to performance gain from it.
