RE:
Hp Pavilion dv8000t CTO notebook
Bios V F.09
Ship date April 7th, 2006
Will NOT boot from CD/ DVD, or from USB floppy. - Was working, booting from both, now it's not. Have NOT installed ANY software, messed with the bios, etc DVD sounded a little rough upon start-up right before I noticed problem, but that may be my imagination.
Received about this time last month. It's been sitting, not used much.
About 5 hours run time, watched part of a movie via the QuickPlay function..
Burned the "restore" discs (2 -single sided)
Used the Cd/DVD, and USB floppy version of Ghost 2003 , v.8.3 to ghost the hd to DVD...
Have burned less than 10 discs. Have not used the LightScribe feature.
Well... I bought an external hard drive enclosure. (Apricorn EZ-BUS-DTC).. Comes with a OEM version of Acronis True Image, ether version being called EZ-GIG-II, version 8.19.
DVD set as 1st boot item in bios, option for that turned on. Tried swapping the order around, USB Floppy first, DVD second, hard drive 3rd...
Problem is the DVD will spin up briefly, then the OS boots.... Noticed the USB floppy drive I was using isn't working as well.... Nothing will boot from the DVD drive... Tried going into the BIOS, to "deselect", then re-enable, etc...
Still nothing..
Was "booting" from drive/floppy, now it's not... Drives can be accessed in the OS. QuickPlay works...
Seeing how the USB Floppy and the CD/DVD will not "boot"... I think I'm looking at a system board.
Have NOT done ANYTHING to the unit, it's mostly been sitting... (Have tried numerous programs, XP install discs from HP, and "bootable" apps/programs that worked on a week or so ago)
I'm not happy at the thought of needing service. I always get the defective stuff...

Update to the above:
BIOS as shipped F.09
BIOS update F.09A showing on HP site.
Have previously been able to boot to a "bootable" dvd/cd to run disk imaging programs, have been able to boot to the OS install disc(s).
Noticed that when running some of those programs a problem with I think the built in touchpad not working "good", had to use the keyboard.
Unit slow to boot sometimes... sometimes hanging at a black screen. Once in OS access can access DVD/CD, USB Floppy... so I'm thinking bios, or bad system board.
Left the main battery out for several hours... still not working.
Took hd OUT.... unit would boot to DVD/CD, USB Floppy...
Re-installed hd, first boot or so (I think) would not boot to dvd/cd, usb floppy...
Had left Xp install disc in unit... rebooted again... and it went to the installer... Before the DVD drive would spin up, at the time it sounded like it had reached the max spin-up speed go silent... booting directly into the OS (black screen that says Starting Windows with process bar)
Removed XP OS install disc... inserted the Apricorn EZ-GIG-II v8.19 disc.. (OEM ver of Acronis True Image) rebooted and I have it "imaging" the drive right now...
One more footnote, when the EZ starts it says something to effect CPU has reached max temp (0)C, shutting down..(Which had been mentioned by others using motherboard temp monitoring software, sames message. After about a minute EZ-GG-II loads.
Have NOT installed the updated Bios so I think all these problems are being caused by a "buggy" bios (vF.09)
Hopefully these issues will be fixed by bios v F.09A
This is what HP says about F.09a, what it fixes over vF.09:
Fixes
Fixes intermittent issue with keyboard controller that prevents the notebook from starting. When this issue occurs, the battery and AC power must both be removed and then AC power must be reconnected before the notebook will start.
Fixes issue where the system stops responding (hangs) during system startup.
Fixes issue where Microsoft Windows Vista cannot be installed.
Enhancements
Provides battery information for HP Battery Diagnotics Program.
(BTW.. HP that's "Diagnostics" Program... turn your spell check on.)
