Oh lordy, I do declare that I'm lin love!

WITH THIS SUPER DUPER OVER POWERED BEAST OF A LAPTOP.

The thing is, is it really worth it?

I want a laptop I can play games on and take with me to LAN parties etc. so I just want to know.

ALso, how long does it take to actually make and be delivered to the address that I send it to?

Cristo,
The mALX is based off a Clevo. Sager resellers are already selling and shipping them, under the NP5950 model number, so, I would imagine it wouldn't take *too* long. AW is of course going to put a pretty (darn swanky, IMO) paintjob on it before sending it to you. Oh, just noticed Uzbekistan. Hmm. I have no idea if AW UK will ship there. You need to ask that first! If AW won't, try Rockdirect. They are a UK-based Sager reseller, they may ship to your neck of the woods.

From what I have read, that model (the straight Clevo, I should say) suffers from pretty poor audio (not that any laptop has great onboard audio, mind you). Hopefully, AW will upgrade that if able. It does have a PCMCIA II slot, so, an Audigy ZS 2 card will be a great help. (I use one on my 3790 -- the m9700 I ordered does not have a PCMCIA II slot).

Now, I'll be honest, I was about ready to push the buy button on the 5950, but minutes before I did I found a link for the 17" SLI laptops AW has. Porting the mALX to a LAN party probably wouldn't be too hard. I seriously don't get people complaining about carrying 15 pounds. That's like two one-gallon jugs of milk, maybe. Flying anywhere with that might be another story. I checked Delta.com's rules on carry-on luggage, and that thing barely meets the size maximums. Without a carry case!

Anyway, it looks like a beauty. If you got the money, and can find AW UK to send it to you, or a Sager reseller, I'd go for it.

EDIT: For a typo.

Only AW is offering dual 7900GTX cards at this moment. So there's one reason to go AW if you're dropping the cash
post #4 of 37
That is true. The Sager resellers will have the 7800 GTX. Hopefully, AW UK can ship to Uzbekistan.

Sager is a reseller, not a manufacturer.

The base unit for the mALX is a Clevo base unit, and it's an ALX so there are many extras you won't get elsewhere. For one, the 7900GTX cards in SLI, the case, the paint, and the extras you can see in the configurator.

Right, I mistyped.

However, I led him down the Sager path because he is in Uzbekistan. If he cannot get AW UK to ship there, perhaps he can find a Sager reseller, like Rock, also in the UK, or perhaps one in Germany, who will. Sure, it won't have the spiffy paint, but it is pretty much the same laptop. There isn't *too* much of a difference between the 7800 and the 7900 from what I have read.

In my opinion, when you going to throw around 5k+ USD, it best to have some options.

That is going to be a sweet machine. If I had the cash I'd get it but my 5720 is treating me good right now

Did you mean, cannot wait?

Well, either way...

Now, these are from a Sager-badged version of the original Clevo model. I do not vouch for the reliability of the site that did the review/benchmarks. Nor do I have any clue how optimized the drivers were. I am under the impression that AW supplies some better drivers than the stock, antiquated ones Clevo gives (from my experience of what came with my 3790).

Here are some benchies.

The location isn't actually a problem at all, we have some friends in America and they travel a lot etc. and would be willing to bring it to Denmark (where I'm originally from) and where I'm going this summer, and I'd just get it then.

Thanks for all the info, sounds absolutely amazing. I'll be ordering it later tonight, once we've found some other friends who can bring it back since the ones we had orignally planned to take it back now say they can't :S

Damn shame, but oh well. Oh and, I checked the www.alienware.co.uk site and other european alienware "sites" but it seems the mALX can only be purchased in the U.S. Why is that?

Thanks again

Oh I'd also like to point out I no longer live in Uzebkisthan, but that I have actually moved to Spain now, in Europe.

Sorry about that :P

Oh Gosh!

I just went to sager's website and looked up the "NP5950" on their site.

And I realised that at the default specs it cost 3,100 opposed to Alienware's 4,499 Dollars.

Are you serious??

What the hell is the 1,300 Dollars extra for? The mouse and the paint job? :S

If so, screw the paint job I'll just save the 1,300 and get it without the paintjob and with another 1 gig of RAM (which, I might add, only costs 160 Dollars etc. as opposed to Alienware's 300 Dollars!!).

Edit: Plus they ship to other countries!
Dual 7900GTX is one reason its more expensive. Then the paint job, as you mentioned, plus its ALX so you're being taken care of by one service rep who is assigned to you specifically. ALX costs more money but the service is second to none at that level. Ask some of the ALX owners around the forums how well they were/are treated.

Guess it does make sense then.

Thanks, put it in a different perspective for me

No prob....if you have $1300 extra to spend on the performance (7900gtx X 2) and have any need for the ALX perk/aesthetic package, then I think you'll really enjoy your AW. It will certainly turn heads when your out in public with it.

My cons on the mALX:

-Don't like puce colored-laptops

-1680x1050? WTF?

-Would actually prefer a single card 7900go with 512Ram as at least a cheaper option for folks who still want a 19' Laptop.

-Ain't been released yet = I'd rather wait for the 2nd mobo revision when they work the eventual problems out.

Bottom line, I'm sticking with my A51m 7700 for about another year.

I thought that at first, too. I went over to some local shops and found some 19" LCDs with that resolution. Not bad. I could have lived with it.

Well, AW hasn't shipped *theirs* yet, but they are live from other companies. I haven't read anything but the usual laptop "faults," meaning onboard sound.

If the ALX service is worth the premium, then it is a good deal. Besides, the paint job looks pretty nicely done, IMO. (Your opinion, of course, may differ!)

Spain, eh? Sweet. That is on my short list of places to see when I finally get across the "small" pond. Been all over the Pacific and Asia; but never to Europe (except an overnighter in Germany, which doesn't count).

Hahaha everywhere else but Europe? :P

I've lived in 6 different countries in Europe alone, but I've traveled a fair bit to other continents.

Just need Antarctica and South America and I'll have been everywhere :P
