Alienware mALX - Page 2

I have to say I'm torn between the m9700 and the mALX. The biggest factor for me is that the 19" screen seems to be a bit on the extreme side for a lappy AND it has a lower res than the 17" on the m9700. How much of difference would you see with the 17" 1920 x 1200 m9700 vs the 19" 1680 x 1050 on the mALX?

There is also the 7900 GTX vs the 7900 GS. How much performance would I lose if I were to go with the m9700 with the dual GS cards?

As to your first question, you won't be able to play games at 1600x1200, and that's my major beef with the mALX.

As to your 2nd question, with the 2 gs's I guess you'll get the performance of 1.5 times that of a single 7800gtx go, but with the 2 gtx's, you'll get about 3-3.5 times the power of a single 7800gtx go (again my guess) with actually less pixels to push due to the lower native res.

So yeah, it is a tough decision.

Well don't forget...

If you're buying a lapotp because its mobile (and you are too) you can do what I do. I run a nice LCD at home at 1600x1200 and the regular lapper screen at native of 1920x1200 when I travel. So although the mALX is only a 1680x1050 panel it will still pump out super high resolutions to an ourboard LCD monitor.

Craig, I know alot of people do this, and I've thought of it too, but correct me if I'm wrong, if you game on an external monitor, do you still have to leave the laptop lid open for adequate cooling? That's the part I don't like. I want to be able to slide my lappy out of view as I game.

Guess you could use an external keyboard and mouse. I think I will anyway to save ware and tare on the laptop keyboard

it all depends on how the laptop's cooling ducts are setup...the Sager I have can be closed completely.

Awesome looking lappy...but the reso's a bummer

I'm less than a year into my first AW (see specs below..it's wonderful and eats Oblivion alive at a widescreen reso), so I couldn't pull the trigger on the mALX if I wanted to..but that is one damn fine looking and powerful machine. My hope would be in a few years (when there's cash at hand!!!), the resolution on this type of power would meet the screen size and *bam* I'd buy!

later,
pat!

My sentiments exactly. Although not in a FEW years. More like mid-'07. but I'm just talking out of my ass. And like you, my 7700 is less than a year old, so I can wait.

It is an outstanding looking machine, though, and the power is to die for...but frankly, my 7700 is a dream...more power than i need !

But when they get the mALX ramped up with maxed reso...ugh It's time to start scheming away to free up around six grand!!!!!

later,
pat!

Well my a51m 3.2gig 7700 with the 7800goGTX is starting to show its limitations:
In Doom 3 at 1600x1200 high quality and 2xAA it drops down to 30fps during the most intense scenes. And ever since the new Quake 4 patch allows me to run at 1920x1200 I have to do it with shadows off and noAA. Plus, Prey is coming soon, and that's gonna be slightly more demanding than Q4. So yeah, I'm looking for something better. I'm still broke though, but maybe in '07.

The Sager sli laptop is also going to have the 7900GTX's, I already received an email from them about it. So there will be a choice for the 7800s or 7900s. I have the 7800s and the laptop smokes everything.

I agree, with SLI, especially two gtx's, it will have all the computing power you need to run at ultra high resolutions. Problem is, nobody is making higher res 19" screens yet for laptops.

As for the 7900gs's vs. 7900gtx512, I was told by someone at Alienware that the SLI 7900's are beating a single gtx512 by around 25%, and at the same power and less heat, it's a good result I think. SLI'ed gtx512's would be better than the 7900gs's again, but at twice the power consumption, and more than twice the heat to shed.

The 7900's aren't a dramatic improvement like you're guessing over the 7800's. More like 10 - 15% improvement from the articles I've read. In SLI, you'll see about a 50%+ improvement in performance, so the 7900gtx's wouldn't be twice as fast as a single 7800gtx IMO, but probably pretty close.

I can live with pretty close to 50% difference! LOL

uh oh, i bought my mALX a month ago and after reading these reviews im kind of worried. I have a seperate 19' samsung that i can externally connect to, but does the res really matter all that much? I play CS CZ in Cal O league (sponsored by Aquafina) and i was kind of hoping my mALX would arrive by the time CAL league opens. Anyways what im worried about is the resolution on thet mALX still enough to perform extraordinarily well on games like CS? (counter strike if you dont know what im talking about) and if so, how much better will the m9700's resolution be?

It will perform better the lower the resolution, so you won't have any problems. It will also display higher resolutions with ease on your external monitor.

The issue of resolution is that the mALX has so much power, it can run great at much higher resolutions so the screen in it won't limit performance, it limits the level of detail on the screen.

^ You'll be able to run everything max settings on cs, don't worry. You'll be able to run every game at max settings except oblivion because even the best rigs(ati x1900 crossfire or sli 7900 gtx, oblivion is not quad sli supported) can't put max settings. Maybe at like 1024 x 724 or but oblivion is such a graphically intensive game.
