Im really jonesing for a new notebook. Im actually considering a msi 1058... the 12.1 inch turion x2 model:
http://www.rkcomputer.net/downloads/...-1058_spec.pdf
questions:
#0. will this system be able to run vista premium?
#1. how much of a "step down" is a 12.1 screen from a 15.4? for example right now I can load "a lot" of tabs in fire fox." and have 7 programs opened up in the bottom task bar...
#2. how much better is the smaller screen/system on batteries?
#3. how much of an improvement will I get from a low end sempron?
#4. how much of an improvement will the ATI RS485m be over the ATI 200M?
#5. has anyone here gone from a 17" or 15" to a 12" and regretted it?
#6. how important is this dvd multi drive stuff? it sounds like the only thing it adds is DVD ram which afaik is a dead standard.
#7. on a personal note I have a bad back (recently went thru surgery)...I also am getting older and getting bad eyes (near field)...
so there's kinda a conflict...a small screen= easy on the back and portable but bad on the eyes
a large screen=easy on the eyes...less portable...harder on the back

thats all I can think of right now...

Yes

It is small but this is truly a powerful thin and light that is future proof. Dual core 64 bit mobile - can't ask for much more.

The power draw won't be that much difference. MSI should have a 15+ incher soon too.

#3. how much of an improvement will I get from a low end sempron?

Oh tons of improvements and features if it runs according to specs. The features I speak of include things such as Pacifica Virtualization and Presidio Security technolgies

This should shed light on the issue.

#4. how much of an improvement will the ATI RS485m be over the ATI 200M?

Not much in a notebook.

#5. has anyone here gone from a 17" or 15" to a 12" and regretted it?

I have never gone down in size, but am seriously thinking of this notebook. Depeneds on what you use it for. i game at home when I have time and do not game like I did on my mobile.

I need a powerful lappy that excels outside of gaming and having a powerful yet thin andlight notebook is right up my alley. The screen size does not matter to me for coding, db design, e-mail, etc. It may for you. Nonetheless, I am used to my 24" LCD.

How important is it to you?

Well that is a consideration to think about. I think galre and brightness will be more of a disservice than small screens. Remember about the native res though.

native resolution is wxga....is that good for a 12.1" or does that mean the text will be teeny tiny?

The aspect ratio is 16:10 I think if it is anything like the other models. That means the native res for this size screen should be around 1280x800. The W means that it is a wide aspect. For everyday use that is fine, but it sucks IMHO for gaming. I like running at least 16x12, but then again i wouldn't game on this lappy.

ok gaming is not really a concern...must be too late for people to have much to say about this system...I think it could be pretty cool cos you can build it yourself.

MSI 1058 plus the TL-52 for $902. That's the cheapest I've found it.

Newegg for the 1gig DDr2 Ram - $70 after $10 rebate.
80 gig HDD 7200 for $130

total of $1102 for a blazing laptop. Not even Dell can beat this.

Cannot run 1z1gig 667

I've had to change the ram to 2x1gig 533. IT cannot run the 2x1gig 667. IT's probably a bios issue, but asides from that I'm actually really happy with the laptop.
