Review: Asus W2JB Review 56K? AHAHAHA! - Page 4

Damnit!

Right after I get my "new notebook", Asus upgraded the W2JB to the original spec and is now introducing/reintroducing the W2JC. Damnit.

I'll tell myself it doesn't matter since I like this book anyway. (I should have been more suspicious with all the price reductions and rebate offers available for this model). sigh...

Edit:
Sorry about this misinformation. The default homepage for IE when I got the W2JB pointed to this Asus website:
http://www.asus.com/products2.aspx?l1=5&l2=22

My bad, this is their "Global" website & is not the "North America" site. So, I was wrong to say W2JC is available right now. Sorry for the confusion. My mistake.

Thanks for pointing it out. But it's very unclear to me what the prices are since C9Tech bunch them up together. But central computer has them for $2079 after $200 rebate.

Did I understand Cannedand correctly: Is the W2Jc (I.E. the W2J with the WSXGA screen) going to be available in the US soon?

I should not have typed the wrong info before thoroughly checking it out first. My bad. Edit: Saturday, 06/24/2006 01:23AM. I thought in addition to huskyfan23's excellent review (which was my primary point for buying the W2JB ,) now it seems there is a review here: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1979702,00.asp And a mention here: http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/23/a...ptop-reviewed/ I hope this isn't considered hijacking of the thread.

Hi all

excellent review and thanks to everyone for their contribution in the form of questions and comments! I'm much more determined to buy ASUS W2JB / W2JC machine now

Does anyone know where I could buy one in London? I've sent email asking c9tech about the shipping but haven;t got reply yet

Also, maybe dumb question but... which memory exactly do i need to buy to expand it to 2gigs RAM (if it comes with 1gig). And would i be able to fit it in myself?

Thanks again!

In the U.K. the W2JC is available according to their website.
http://www.asus.com/products2.aspx?l1=5&l2=22
I'm not familiar with U.K. retailers and/or web retailers, though a bit of googleing will help.

Memory for W2J (b/c) is 667MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMM 200-pin non-ECC memory. As always, go with Corsair & it is simple enough to do yourself. Just don't remove the piece of plastic under where the memory will be placed. (You'll see it).

Thanks cannedand, I actually went out to check what's available from retail outlets and found a couple of these machines.

Just look at the model drop down menus for each model's price.

GREAT ASUS W2JB retailer

STAR TECH
http://www.stipc.com

Just a quick note about a great place to get the W2JB !!!

I researched *extensively* before purchasing this computer. I checked ALL the US and overseas (yes I was considering the W2JC because of the screen resolution). After MUCH research I hit the jackpot !

My major concerns (other than the screen resolution) were to be able to have the company I bought it from give me as many upgrades as I could possibly get at the best price AND have them handle the warranty !

..then I found STAR TECH. I spoke numerous times to an absolutely GREAT rep named John Fierst. (And no I have no affiliation to this company - I'm just a regular person who has salivated over this laptop) He posts here as well.

SAVINGS: The company offers a discount (check to make sure it's still in effect - email John if unsure - jcf@STIPC.com) to this forum. (code: nbf) In my case it knocked off about $100 PLUS - ASUS *still* has a $200 REBATE on these notebooks. SAVINGS TOTAL = $300

UPGRADES: I wanted T2600 (comes with T2500) - the media center remote (not necessary really but inexpensive enough to have as part of the whole package) - warranty NOT through ASUS at a reasonable price (theirs is 3 years total/in house which was the deal cincher) - 2G ram installed - SATA 100GB 7200 RPM

It already came loaded with everything else I wanted. (802.11 A/B/G, MS XP Media Center, Slot Loading Dual Layer DVD±RW, Bluetooth, Dolby Home Theater, TV Tuner, inputs and outputs, etc)

My concerns over the screen resolution have disappeared. The resolution is absolutely fine. Type-pictures-dvds-everything...looks fantastic. No problem whatsoever...I love the brightness control... plus the ASUS technology that keeps everything true color and bright. It is absolutely splendid...

It is QUIET and NOT HOT and relatively LIGHT (in my opinion). At 1-1/2" thick and probably 7lbs. it can be picked up, moved and carried with ease.

Sound is well laid out and comes out clear and true quality with CDs and DVDs, etc. Records like a dream. Also a number of other very useable software came with it.

A more beautiful laptop (for my taste) I have not seen. (I tend to like sleek and dark and thin - so this is it ! And talk about contruction...beautiful and totally sturdy.

Thanks to John and eveyone at STAR TECH. Email or call him...he was absolutely part of the *deal cinching* as he took time to answer ANY and ALL questions I had...and responded to my emails with lightning speed. Combined with the inhouse warranty ... I am one VERY HAPPY lapper...indeed.

With a FANTASTIC LAPTOP !

W2JC
Review from X-bitLabs.com:

Very good read, yes i know, it isn't the W2JB, but it's still relevant.

Very relevant. The W2JC is the W2JB with a digital TV tuner and higher resolution screen. Real nice review at that link as well.

Nice review huskyfan23! Definitely got my attention and will consider Asus W2Jx. Just hope they will release one with the C2D processor soon. Per chance, do you know if you can buy a spare battery for this laptop?

Edit: batterygeek.net says their battery works with Asus laptops. I'll probably contact them to confirm it when the time comes.
