XPS Gen2/M170 + 7900 GTX Lets Get This Done And Put This Puppy To Rest!

Ok folks I'm tired of waiting to find out if it will work. Since the scarcity of obtaining these cards has made it difficult for those of us willing to be guinea pigs with our XPS M170s I propose the following.

If anyone here would like to loan me their 7900 GTX, you know that extra one you have lying around, I will hack my Gen2/XPS M170 to answer this question once and for all. Or if anyone would like to PM me with a way to get the card I will buy it myself and sell it if it does not work.

I am willing to make a deposit on the loaner to someones paypal account but you must have frequented this forum for some time and have some good feedback on heatware or ebay. Price TBD.

Just trying to put this puppy to rest. If anyone has any other suggestions or is already doing this let me know.

Awesome man!!!

Here's some REP for you, well deserved!

Now: Someone with a 7900GTX lend this man your card, or hook him up with a source ASAP!

Cornholio, your the man.

All we need is to get someone with an M1710 to say they have a video card problem, get a replacement from Dell, and then let a Gen2/M170 user borrow it until they can get it working in their system. Then just send it back to Dell

Exactly my man, exactly...

Someone has to help a brother out, he can finally put this to rest.

I'm not sure if anyone's going to be willing to hand over a perfectly good video card to you after that statement

Wishing thinking this issue can be put to rest. I don't think anybody will be willing to loan you their 7900 even for cash until they would be able to buy a replacement - at which point you might as well buy one yourself. There are lots of people willing to do like you, it's just that we all have the same problem - no 7900.

Good luck with this, my vote is that it will work just fine as long as the connector issue is resolved.
Good luck...

I don't see why this connector is causing such an issue...

It's in the way - so remove it. Buttons don't work now - so directly solder the wires.

There are 12 niclely size wires that will need to be soldered, all of which can be kept low enough not to interfere with the card above...

The only reason I was saying to soder the connector via wires is so that it can still be disconnected when taking the computer apart...otherwise, you're going to have trouble getting the case apart if the wires are directly sodered.

Well yeah, I was just pointing out the fact that it isn't really an issue. People are posting and creating threads about the connector like it is...
yeah you're right..
This is true for some people, but personally I don't know how to sodder

And I don't think learning on an XPS motherboard is a great idea!
Well, your gonna have to bring out the soldering iron to get rid of that post thats in the way anyway...
it's not too hard...most important thing is to take your time
