XPS GEN2/M170 to 7900gtx, why?

Having just sold my XPS GEN2 for a M1710, are those trying to find out if a 7900gtx will fit, doing it to save money or for a challenge?

I've changed my laptop 4 times in the last 4 years and it's cost me approx £450 in total. I've kept my machine in pristine condition but perhaps most importantly always gone for a 3yr NBD warranty. Buyers find a long warranty reassuring. If you get a good deal from Dell changing yearly can be a very cheap.

I think it is the joy of the hobby

I would love to swap my laptop like that, but i can not afford it by myself and as far as my parents are concerned my gen2 should last a few years at least. And getting rid off it would show ingratitude

I work on a small cost after a year or a huge one every three years.

Seems I always seem to take a major hit when I upgrade, so won't be getting the new M1710 for a LONG time. Plus, this thing is pimped out to 2.4 Ghz, so see no real need anytime soon. I'll wait for the DX10 based XPS for my next upgarde.

It amazes me how a purely curious question that had no negativity at all becomes another negative post. I was interested to see if it was the technical challenge or a financial one that saw some look at adding a 7900GTX to their XPS GEN2 or M170 and was just adding my experience.

The thrill that comes from doing a crazy mod is what I do it for. I nearly fried a cpu doing my pinmod (forgot to put the heatink on... haha go figure.. it was crazy. the screen filled with blue hearts at post (like the computer's heart was sad and broken for hurting it..). Freaked me out.. heart waas pounding.. but when everythign ended up ok, I was very very happy.

it's kind of like an extreme sport.. cliff diving or something like that.. But it's a rush that you can get in the comfort of your home.. without the use of harmful substances in your body.

It's also a symbol of technical power (I have a 9300). There are a few others at my school (UMBC) with 9300s, but every one I've talked to stares in amazement when I show them the 7800gtx in action, or tell them about the pinmod. I dont need to be the best or nothing.. I'm not too competetive most of the time, and dont do it to show off. I do it for myself.

In response to your previous post (I tried to leave it alone, but I couldn't), I'm sure you know how message boards work.. Everybody is always really tense and preped to attack somebody for no good reason. Nobody ever takes what you say as how it was meant, and everybody wants the last word. Dont worry about it. there's no need to explain yourself. In support of that other guy, I guess the title of the thread could sort of seem like it was created with hostility, but it obiously wasn't. You were just saying what you knew and asking for response. I never knew that it was that much easier to sell a used laptop with a warranty. I usually assumed people that bought a laptop every year were affluent enough to do so. I also never really bothered with an extended warranty.. I think I may to get one with my next laptop and try your way out.

Thank you for giving us knowledge of your experiences, and thanks to everybody else for doing so also.

Do really need another negative thread about bla bla bla why are you doing this when bla bla bla?

Jesus. It's a public forum. He can ask what he wants, the man's just curious.

Why do you have to see everything negatively? And you called me a cynic.

Don't worry about it. I stated in a different thread that speculation alone on the GPU swap won't get anyone anywhere, and I even wished Cornholio luck because he volunteered to try the swap, and he still said the same thing.

I want the 7900gtx because Im not impressed enough with the duo performance boost to get a new laptop. Id much rather set myself up for a new system when the dx10 exclusive games hit the market. Also interms of laptop mods, if its possible its easy. But then I assemble/mod clevo laptops for a living so Im a bit less sensitive than most.

Unless you do some serious video encoding (and need dual core) - I would wait until Vista comes out at the very least (I'm going to wait until June 2007).

From what I've seen of Vista, I would recommend a dual-core machine at the very least with 1 GB of RAM to run it comfortably.
