USB keyboard with docking station?

Thread Starter
Can I use any USB keyboard with a docking station? For example, there are Dell keyboards that say they work with "select Dell systems" - I want to use the keyboard with my HP dv4000 through a Targus docking station with a Dell external monitor.

Thanks for the help.

If you have a docking station with USB ports than any USB keyboard will work.

RE: Connecting Mouse and Keyboards to Docking stations

Can't find Docking station with PS2 inputs with VGA input.

You get one or the other. I have plenty of keyboards and mice, ALL have the round PS2 plugs. Am I ancient? Do I have to go out and buy a USB keyboard and mouse just to get compatible plugs?

Thanks for any help or comments. (BTW- I don't want to go wireless for mouse and keyboards, or do I ?)

You could get a ps2/usb bridge - basically a usb lead at one end and two ps2 connectors at the other.

WHat are you looking for? VGA input? I think you mean VGA output as in to plug an external monitor into it, or no? What kind of laptop do you have? You may find a docking station made for you laptop that has all of this and goes through a special port on the laptop rather than using a USB port. Other wise, there are several USB docking stations by Targus, Belkin & Kensington that should have all the ports you're looking for.

I have an Inspiron E1405. The DEll Tech and the Dell Sales Rep could not find a docking station with a VGA input AND one that has PS2 inputs.

- I have searched on the internet as well without luck .... but I did find Brand new keyboards and Mouses that come with PS2 plugs, so I'm not as ancient as I thought, it's just that my Laptop and all the Docking stations seem to use USB.

(I am just trying to hook up a desktop situation when I'm not traveling.)
Certainly I can't be the only one that wants that, you know ... VGA Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, etc.

Now I am finding the VGA port on the Laptop won't work either because the INTEL graphics display card won't support XGA AND VGA.

Thanks for all your responses, I did get a 'USB to PS2' cable, it works on the Laptop, but not the Docking station.

And I am off to the site above.

there will never be a docking station for the 1404. nothing more than a usb hub type , which is junk

All the USB type docking stations I've seen that have a moinitor port nowadays don't have any PS2 ports and the ones I've been able to find with PS2 ports don't have video. I coul have sworn that there were some Targus/Belkin/Kensington ones a few years ago that had both, but I can't seem to find them now.

Yes, it's very odd gOOnter. I've looked at 8 or 9 USB docking stations, NONE with both. So far Chevy is right, but I'm going to keep hunting next week.

There has to be a market for all the 14"/ 15" Display Notebook owners ?!

there is but the laptops themselves arent built with an internal docking port. who wants to plug in a monitor all the time to use a dock? that makes it irrelavent. i have a usb hub the has all my devices plugged into it.

i simply plug in the monitor,ac,speackers, and ONE usb and im set.
