Advice on Acer Travelmate 3000 (3002 in US)

Hi. I am looking to purchase my first laptop. My friend in Australia (I am in New York) purchased this laptop recently and loves it. I am not knowledgeable about computers. I have spent hours reading through many threads here and it has been extremely helpful.

Do you think this is a good computer? I was drawn to it because of the light weight (3lbs). I don't play games. This is mainly to do document work and go on the internet while I am traveling. I also like to play around with photos but just for fun, not professionally.

One other question I have concerns the external optical drive. I understand what the word "external" means...outside of...but is the cd thing actually a seperate unit or is it connected somehow. I will need to transfer documents from my desk top, back and forth, so was wondering if this would be a pain in the neck if it is a separate unit.

Thanks in advance.

I had read your review and you had some problems with the 3010..hot palm rest, backwards buttons, etc. Do you think that was just a fluke with your particular laptop?

If you think that the 3010 is a better machine I would take your advice. It is obvious to me that you all know what you are talking about. I am looking for light weight and long battery which both the 3010 and 3002 have. I don't know what core duo is but I assume that is better. I really just want a good computer that works without any issues. I am unable to make any intelligent decision among the four billion versions of laptops because I haven't a clue what differences they have or, more importantly, what the differences mean.

Thanks for your time.

on paper the 3010 is far superior because the 3000 is the predassesor SP?, to the 3010. the hot palm rest is i think an acer thing, people say they have no problems with the laptop stability wise its just really uncomfortable, so i recommend you have an external mouse so you dont need to use the scorching hot touch pad.

its a neat little machine if you can get a good one (by good one i mean one thats not gonna blow up, acer is really hit and miss), i also recommend a minimum of 1GB of ram because the video is shared, its 512-128 stock so windows only has 384 to work with. thats hardly enough to really do anything

Ok. Thanks. I really mean that. I am going to do some more reading here on the reviews of manufacturers and systems. I need to educate myself a bit more or at least try to. You can't appreciate how smart you all sound because you know your stuff.
