Dell's Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio and LINUX

Thread Starter
Hi all!

Do anyone know if new sound option from Dell's offer called: "Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio" works with Linux ?
Are there any drivers ? Alsa project ?
Have anyone experience on fighting with thiscard ?

I know that Intel's onboard sound works well, but that Sound Blaster have a bit better quality.. but it's a risk to buy it for Linux.

Here is a some info from Dell:

Thanks for help!

I've got a Dell Latitude 110L notebook (it features you can see here), and my integrated sound card does not work with Red Hut 9, and Intel 915 chipset not recognized by OS (I use VESA driver, but it looks ugly and slowly). Does anybody answer, can it work properly with SUSE?

for the love of god stay away from Suse, and RedHat/Fedora. do yourself a favor.

that said, in the kernel under "Device Drivers ---> Sound --->ALSA" there is a module for Intel HD Audio..... i figure tahts what you need. most big scale distro (read: UBUNTU) include it by default. or if you go a little more personal (READ: arch or gentoo) then you can always recompile the kernel with it included.

the 915 should work fine, although not great. if you want good video support do consider nvidia.

Well, thanx, I'll try to stay away from SUSE. I don't want to reinstall OS, but if necessary... Do you know, where I can find drivers for Intel 915 Video for Red Hut 9? Standard drivers are for Windows only...

lol....renixblog, you really gotta learn to pick out better distros for yourself, then again, i guess if it works for you, its all fine, it just so happens that both suse adn red hat / fedora are craptastic on my laptop.

i believe 915 drivers just like Intel HD Sound drivers could be found in the kernel.

my best advice is compile your own kernle to make sure you have everything setup how you want it.

Sound card is a second problem... There's no drivers in my kernel for Intel 915... I downloaded from downloadfinder.intel.com these RPMs, but not installed them yet. I'm expecting problems installing them... Just ask google - you'll be scared by results...

although this is for Arch linux, you'll find these page helpful most likely, take a look:

the sigmatel will probably work, the creative add on won;t so you;ll be stuck with the unoptimized audio.

mario, are you sure you have "Intel Audio HD" compiled either into your kernel or as a module? Do this:
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
make --menuconfig
Device Drivers > Audio > ALSA > PCI
[M] Intel Audio HD
exit, say yes to save to config file. then If "Intel HD Audio" is already marked as [M] or[*] before you even touch it, dont change anything and just quit out of menuconfig
Code:
make && modules_install

Hi abf

I have installed Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper in my laptop. With ubuntu all hardware works out-of-the-box, included the sound with the snd-hda-intel module, but I don't understand if this module uses the integrated intel audio or the sound blaster audigy. If any with a audigy can post its lspci output I will be grateful.

Thanks.

i think you should be able to tell by lspci what it puts out. i mean if it uses intel, i'd say "intel audio" or if it used sound blaster it'd say "creative" but then agian, just a guess since i dont have either
post #15 of 19
ABF he mentioned lspci not having anything about his sound Which is why he was asking for a copy of lspci to be posted to compare.

By the way MarioFuentes, post yours sometime if you get a moment and we can take a look through it as well. But I am confused as to what your exact setup is... Are you saying you have a seperate Sound Blaster card seperate from your internal audio? If that is the case how is this hooked up?

The integated SB audigy is only SOFTWARE. Since there is no creative software ported to linux, it wont work with the "enhanced" features.

The previous poster was correct. What the "Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio" is, is upgraded Windows drivers. You can read some users' experience with it at this thread;

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=56839

So obviously these Windows drivers will not work at all with Linux. As far as Linux support for your hardware, you could always check the Alsa Project page. If it's Creative hardware it may be supported with Alsa drivers.
