Precision M65/M90

Currently I am trying to decide between the Precision M65 and
the Precison M90.

I'm not going to do any intense travelling, but I would sure
appreciate to take it along to some relative nearby places
like home/office/friends etc.

As I will mainly use the machine for software development and
simulations I thought the 17" WUXGA would be a good choice, but
I have read that there might be issues with the WUXGA LCD panel
like "more than normal" leakage (perhaps other problems as well?)

And perhaps the WUXGA is too hard to use for my main purpose,
a lot of reading and writing. If I choose the M65 I guess the
WSXGA+ option is better, but for the M90 I'm unsure of WUXGA.

The Dell sales representative I talked to suggested that the
M65 is of better "quality". "A more sturdy frame and not as
plastic as the M90", as he put it. So his recommendation was the M65.
(mentioned magnesium alloy for the M65, which was missing in the M90?)
He also implied that the M90 is a bit clumsy (which of course is of
a subjective matter, but anyway). As I understand there isn't really
a *huge* difference between the M65 and M90 when it comes to
size and weight, or?

I would really appriciate if someone could give me some input on
these machines. I have no chance to see them live because
Dell doesn't have showroom (or alike) here in Sweden.

Thanks a lot!

well I sent you a PM

but I have only had experience with the M90 though i am considering buying a M65 just to get a look at one

the M65 is overall a stronger unit physically but performance will not be as good as the M90. the WUXGA screen is totally doable with the 17 inch which will likely be comprable to the WSXGA on the 15 inch screen the M65 offers.

Thanks!

In what area would the M65 perform worse than the M90?
I can think of the graphics as the M90 has more potent options.

Besides that I thought it would possible to configure the two machines
with equivalent hardware.

The gpu options in the M90 are light-years more powerful than the M65 gpu. For that you pay the price of much higher power consumption and heat.

I know this is subjective but I have had these two units taken down to the system board and I must say the M90 is just as solid as the M65 unit. The M90 has just as much or more Magensium (due to sheer size) the M90 to me also has a much better feeling keyboard, excellent Synaptics touchpad and like you mentioned the GPU in the M90 will easily out perform the M65.

Hi guys... have a few questions:

1) How is the CAD performance of the M65 compared to the M60?
2) Is the M65 a weaker performer than the M70? (Just curious, as based on its nomenclature, it seems the M70 is a "better" machine)
3) What is the heat like on the M65? (The M60 gets warm in the upper-keyboard and on the left palm rest... is this the case with the M65?)
4) Similar question -- what are typical temps (max CPU usage) with the M65?

1) CAD performance is better on the M65 than the M60 - better CPU and better video. what CAD app r u using?

2) the video card on the M70 is a stronger performer than the M65, but the M65 has a better CPU (pentium M vs. duo core)

3) shouldn't be any warmer than an M70. i've owned an M70 for over a year now - and at full load it's very warm, but not hot

4) dunno... maybe do a google search on other notebooks with similar specs and see their temps?

but this shouldn't be a big issue... unlesss ur trying to overclock? don't think u can. besides, dell is not going to purposely put a CPU in a notebook that will overheat (though i'm sure that has happened before)

Hi bluemonkey, thanks for your help! To answer your questions:

1) Pro/Engineer, but I may adapt to new software in the future.
2) Will I notice a difference, then? (For instance, does the CPU "make up for" the graphic card?)
3/4) The reason I ask is that the M60 gets warm to the touch on palm and upper keyboard, as I noted, and I really hate sweaty palms and such when typing. I'd also prefer the fans not have to turn on (eg CPU temp around 40) when I'm just using the internet and, say, IM service, and Word, which isn't at all feasible with my M60. I'd say that other than the heat rejection of the M60, it's a great computer -- so any step up, regardless of brand or power, needs to have better heat dissipation qualities.
