my fans are always running! arghhhh!!

my 9300 fans always seem to be running on max. the temps hover around 50/50 to 52/54 (C). is this normal? the laptop is fairly new, i got it in december! can it really be that much dust clogging it? i havent had it in really dusty places. the room temp is around 75 - 80 F. The lappy is fairly stock, ive mildly OCed the video card thats about it. ive got 1.25 gigs ram, and the 7200 rpm 60 gig.

also, booting up seems to take 10x longer now too! ive got it defragged and fairly low on the startup programs. ive got about 10 gigs free on space too...

what gives?

try holding the function button and hitting Z (hold blue FN button and hit the Z key) this will cause the temperature to be re-evaluated and the fans should speed down.

i did, the fans stopped for 2 seconds and then came back on. temps seem to still be around 50. now they are at 47 C

what temps do you have the "games" profile set up to turn the fans on high? Cause right now i9kfangui is controlling your fans, not the bios

edit: oh yeah...and 45 sounds hight for the CPU unless it is underload. My old 9300 would idle at just below 40 with the fan on slow and I'm in FL with no A/C (that i use...just too used to the heat I guess)

try undervolting and make sure that the cpu is scaling properly.

can you tell me what version of the bios you have when you boot up and also how often do you clean out the dust and fluff from the fans.

i have had a 9100 over heat badly because of build up inside. cleaned it and it was a new computer again like it was on steriods!!

the reason i ask about the bios is that i think up until a bios update the fans ran alot longer.

i had a 9300 and remeber that to increase battery life and reduce the noise dell revised the bios and turned the fans off and let it run hotter.

do you have the early bios?

here are what my fan temps are set to:

as for the bios, they are at what they were like when i got the computer. I cant remember ever updating them. ill double check though to be sure.

Ive also never opened the 9300 up either to check for dust. will opening void the 3 year "at home" warranty, or is there any way for them to see if anything has been tampered with?

I was able to just blow air into the vents and get all the air out.

ill have to get some compressed air and try that. can the white crap that comes out of those cans hurt the lappy?

Don't worry about that. Just blow it when the laptop is off and not on.

Open your laptop and blow the dust from the inside out. If you do it from the outside you take the chance of blowing the dust further into the laptop, making the problem worse. It's ok to blow the dust out from the outside in interim cleanings, but really every once in a while you need to open up and blow the dust off everything.

Also, opening your 9300 will not void the warranty, just be carefull when you are in there and of course take out the battery and unplug it while you have it open.

welcome to Tim's world of replacing his 6800U 3 times and 8 total times in 2 weeks of opening to clean, swap cards and do all over again with each replacement card they sent me.....we need to have latches that quickly clamp and lock and then do the reverse.
