I know this thread is about the Am2 chips but I have to say this...

conroes are coming for half the price and people are getting it OC'ed to 4.1GHz on air, 1m superpi is down to 12.5 seconds

I can read it because I have a freind named google.

Back on topic.. whats an Am2 CPU? Is it like an upraged amd? Like the second generation or something? Im a bit new to AMD...

That was pretty weak of whoever did that Filippo, but I'm guessing it was probably only for 5 or 10 points, which is less than a mosquito flying by your nose..

Should be out officialy by July, but there are some meroms and conroes for sale on ebay. The prices will be pretty low too, compared to AMD 939 series and especially compared to am2 these are the starting prices:

So you see the E6600, with 1066MHz FSB and a whooping 4MB of cache will be cheaper than a 4000+!!! I'm usually all for AMD systems , but this time it looks like Intel is going to crush them (at least for a while). So answering your question, I wouldnt buy a 939 rig right now.

i dont think so, i mean, i am. i dont think the performance gain will be worth it, and hopefully the prices of s939 cpus go down a bit.

That's what I'm hoping for...maybe a CPU upgrade when Conroe comes out, that is if it does drive AMD's prices down and if I build now.

So is there a difference when a new socket is released? The prossesors look about the same... other than power useage, temps, and stepping....
Not sure what stepping is but it doesn't sound too critical... If 939 socket mobos and prossesors come down because of this would it still be worth it to get it?
I think so... Or would new am2 prossessors be released that will be different? =/

There's usually no immediate benefit. But just wait untill amd releases a new line of cpu's.

I dont think that 939 prices will drop that much, especially when I look at the prices for the am2 CPUs.

I'm not sure about the conroe mobo prices right now, I'll look up later. I've seen people building dekstop with Yonah chips, wich are upgradable to meroms, so maybe that's an idea?

Those conroe prices look attractive... Maybe the 1.86 will turn out to be an OCing dream, like those Opty 165's
