Given that the A8Jm may not come to the US other than Portable One, let alone as a whitebook (Built-On).. the HGL30 may become a really attractive option for those who want a configurable 14" whitebook with a powerful (for its size) video card.

for the HGL80, Powernotebooks said it should be around $70-90 more. but keep in mind that it comes with a 9 cell battery as standard, not a 6 cell, as well as a finger print reader. It also has the option for wxga and wsxga. the S96J is pretty much just WXGA with a few resellers offering a wsxga upgrade for a certain fee.

no idea on HEL30 pricing other than that it will come in summer.

Man nice specs and all, but maybe it's just me, but those look... ugly? Especially the HEL80. The HGL30 looks decent. The cover is so reminiscent of the Toshibas.
i hope that turquoise lid is optional...
holly crud, i was eyeing the Asus S96J for some time now but the HEL80 really caught my eye. Can we expect the 7600 go to perform better then the mobile x1600 like the desktop versions have?
The 7600 performs very similar to the X1600.
no way i would consider buying a notebook with that green cover
post #9 of 36
^ Me neither. Screw the green color, its hideous.

There is one more problem with these guys, they don't ship to Canada.
It looks ugly, but me likey the specs. Has anyone heard of Compal?
yeah, their cl56 was big on these forums a few years ago
post #12 of 36
I have to agree with the ugly comments after looking at more pictures. While the S96j is kind of plain/average looking I like its looks much better than the HEL80.

Interesting that the HEL80 is coming configured with the extended 9 cell battery. It looks a little odd in those pictures:

I imagine it will get much better battery time...
i would like it more if it had 2 fans, but i like the green lid

The new Compal laptops are quite interesting in terms of specs, but the build quality of their laptops can vary (Remeber the Dell Inspiron 8x00 series?)and those new HEL and HGL laptops haven't been reviewed yet AFAIK...I personally like the looks of the HEL80 over the Asus S96J, that silver plastic look is just soo early 2000's ;P...

An important thing to note however. The Asus S96J is VBI compliant. The Compals aren't. One of the reasons some vendors are offering the WSXGA option on the Asus is that the LCDs are standardized by the VBI specs. What this means is that you can swap out the LCD panels (assuming you're handy with tools and are willing to open the case). Just get a VBI compliant WSXGA panel of the same size from an online vendor and swap it out. The screw locations and electrical connectors are supposed to match.

I have read somewhere on Intel website (forgot the link) that those Compal models are VBI compliant as well

Edit: found the link

just wanted to add.. heard info from a reseller that the HGL30 coming to the US will NOT HAVE A TURQOISE LID

unfortunately no idea what color the lid will be other than that I know a black one does exist.

That is so bizarre and stupid! What are their marketing flacks thinking not including the "VBI" logo?

Well, either way, that elevates the Compal laptops in my eyes...now if only they could compete with the Asus VBI laptops in terms of price...

The Compal HGL30 will have the turquoise lid. The VBI version will have the black lid.

Compal has two versions of the HEL80, actually three. One is VBI and the other two are their own, one is WXGA and the other is WSXGA+. Their own versions include some extra features like extra media buttons and a higher quality screen.

Its hard to say which one looks better. The simplicity of the 96j is nice. Z96j will look the same. Been eyeing the HEL80 for a bit now, it kind of grows on you. I like the brushed aluminum alot, but the front below the keyboard just looks sorta 'fat'. The WSXGA+ Matte (Prism Technology) sounds nice.. heard really good things about it so far. Its really sunny here in los angeles, so a nice quality matte may be preferable to the glossy that will be in z96j... Im definately leaning towards Compal at the moment, if only to spite Asus for being meanies about releasing the z96j... "eta late may early june" my a$$. Although the x1600 is a bit faster, i dont think its enough to be a deciding factor. Standard 9-cell is sweet too..
