help! vaio slow booting

Thread Starter
hey everyone,
ive been trying to work on my friend's laptop.
its a VGN-FS740/W.
the problem im having is that when you boot up the computer, it stays at the XP flash screen around 1 minute and a half(the scroll bar at the bottom still moving). but definately longer than before.

but then after that, the screen will go blank for about 30 seconds and then finally take me to the login screen. after loggin in there is a little more delay, but im sure thats probalby some programs in the msconfig menu that i need to check out.

my main concern is the long time spent at the splash screen, then the 30 second blank screen. has anyone seen that before?

ive already done spyware scans, spybot search & destroy, antivirus scans(AVG). even did them from safe mode. still nothin found.

the laptop was purchased back in december, and until a week or so ago, it was running perfectly. the only major software change was going from norton to avg, which was months ago. more than 3quarters hard drive space unused.

ive been told that maybe its a mbr problem and that maybe it just needs to be repaired.

any thoughts? i'd appreacate it. thanks.

I am working on the same make and model of that laptop and have the same EXACT issue. I have went into msconfic and uncheck everything that is not neccesary for boot and still have the same issue. I have booted in safe mode and still same thing. I have even tried doing a checkdsk to see if perhaps bad sectors on hd or try to find corrupt files. i was going to try defrag but when i did the analysis the drive was not even fragged. it looked liked a new load. i have run various spyware and virus scans and found nothing. Also don't know if this is just my PC but upon bootup did you notice the windows startup sound "stuttering"?

It is very likely that your NTLDR.DAT is corrupt. I’m not one to dismiss most computer problems with Virus Infections. But I’m 99% sure you have a backdoor Trojan. Back door Trojans are unlike any other Virus, they are very dangerous. Simply put someone can use your internet connection to access the internet. Norton and will not detect this virus because is resides in your SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION which is inaccessible. What Norton may be doing is restoring your NTLDR.dat on boot up then the Virus is changing it back. That could be why boot up takes so long.
The FIX
Format Hard Drive. When you format with windows installation it will not remove the SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION. It just overwrites it. You may want to get a copy of System Mechanic 6, This includes drive scrub, Kaspersky Ant hacker Firewall, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, and System Mechanic 6. If you own a business or have very important information on your computer this is a must.
Reinstall OS, if you haven’t made your Recovery Discs then make them for reinstall. Don’t worry about the Virus transferring back to the Recovery Discs, the recovery information is on a different partition.
Before you reinstall your OS first install System Mechanic 6 in order to create the drive scrub. Once again format your HD with drive scrub. It will take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours to do so. I’ve been running Kaspersky Anti hacker & Anti Virus over a year now and have not had a Virus. I’ve heard rumors about System Mechanic 6 with a lifetime of virus activations on btmon.com .

Hi I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FS38GP and am suffering simliar problems to those described by cphares.

On top of the slow start up, and the windows sound stuttering when I log in however. I get the following issues.

1. When I start an application (any app) or make it perform some processing, that app seems to take 100% of the cpu stopping anything else from working at the same time. e.g. if I'm listening to music it will stutter and slow down whilst the app is doing whatever it does. The music will play fine if the pc is not trying to do anything else.

2. The PC seems to spend a lot of time accessing the hard disk at these times, I thought perhaps it was swappin the memory?

This problem started recently and prior to that the laptop was fine. It's a 2.3gh processor with 1gb of ram.

If you have any suggestions that I can try before having to do a complete format and re-install it would be great as I have a lot of data on the hdd.

Thanks
Peter

Hi,

I am new to the forums here but I am having the exact same problem as listed above. I had already taken most of the steps above as well. In addition I did a full system restore (albeit not a low-level HD format) and tried moving the memory to another slot (as mentioned in other forums). Nothing has worked so far.

The system is usable but it takes 5 minutes for a full boot and things are sluggish after that.

I was just wondering if CDOGAK24 had resolved the issue and if, indeed, a full format was necessary. It is a work computer that a co-worker relies on and I was hoping to get this resolved in a day or less. Oh well...

Oh, and I have a slightly different model of Vaio - VGN-BX560B but the issue is exactly the same as previously mentioned. I am running XP Pro in a Novell Netware 6.5 environment at work (although the same issue occurs even when no Novell software is installed).

Thanks for any help.

- Todd
