4080 WON'T BURN CD-R's!

Hello All.

Just got my 4080 today, and everything looks so great.....

UNTIL I try to copy a CD. I tried NERO Express 6. After creating the image, I pop in a CD-R, and about 80% through, I get a "burning failed" error. I tried many things after that, including burning data through XP's UI, and that failed, too. Then I tried a trial copy of Alcohol 120%, and THAT failed.

I tried a different media, (a Verbatim CD-RW), and I had the same headache. Tried to lower the write speed to 8X. No good. I must have created 10 coasters today.

I'm at the end of my rope with it. Any ideas? Oh... the media I used the first time was Memorex 700/80 52x multi speed. I've used it in laptop burners before, with no problem.

Must be the day for optical drive problems. My 4080's cd drive door won't stay shut. Each time I shut it, it just pops back open as if I've hit the button. To make matters worse I just ordered this laptop less than a month ago, and had to RMA it less than a week after receiving it. I just got it back last week and now this problem develops . I'm beginning to wonder if I made the right decision going with a Sager. I know all laptops have problems occassionally, but I've already had more problems with this one than I ever had with my old Toshiba.

Think I might have solved the puzzle.

While trying (and failing) to do the burning with Windows Media Player, I stumbled on the WMP error message Dbase. One of the errors listed, though not the one I had, indicates that having "enable digital CD audio for this device" checked in the device manager can interfere with your CD-RW's ability to write audio to a CD, which is done in analog mode. OK.....

So I unchecked "enable digital CD audio for this device", and FINALLY burned an Audio CD with WMP. Then, just to see, I used the XP burning utility to burn data to a CD (which had ALSO failed previously). The data CD took, as well. So I'm not POSITIVE that it will solve all problems, but I'm still running through the tests with this option disabled.

Try it out. More results are coming. Good luck.

I think it has something to do with the heat. After gaming, the cd drive gets REALLY hot, especially on the underside of the laptop where the sticker is. I used nero 6 last night and burned two cd's, but both times nero said it saved the drive from 4 buffer underruns. That doesn't sound right to me, unless it's just a crap drive. My NEC dvd-+rw in my desktop has a similar problem when it gets hot. If I try to burn 4+ cd's, by the fourth it starts failing constantly. I'm blaming heat, and I almost wish I could do without my sager for three or four weeks while I returned it for something else, just because of this and a few personal factors. Just my two cents.
