Right now I am pretty nx9420 addicted
To be quite hinest, I was very hesitating to come back to HP, but now I really cant say a bad word. For that money it is an excellent notebook!
I was also thinking of aiting a bit for 9440, but that is the nw which means quite different price cathegory. I can only recomend. Plust the 9440 is supposed to come woth the N-Vidia FX card if I am not mistaken and I have heard only good thinks about them. I have no experience with CAD cards at all, also the display counts for a lot. I have Phillips WSXGA+ mounted in my rig with 256MB ATI X1600 it is just great. If you opt to go for WUXGA, then you have way too much of realestate. The screen is OK, it is no lamp, but it is very nice and not too dim. There is some minro light leakage, but not worse than in other high level notebooks. Good job - you can see little dark corners, but not an issue for me. It draws everything crystal clear and I am loving it even for my phoshop and Video cutting stuff.
I have no experience with Dell, but these were my two cents about HP 94xx, hopefully it helped
