Help on a new E1505 (long)

Thread Starter
I'm considering swapping my old Inspiron 8600 for a new E1505. I travel a lot and, as much as I would like to get a more powerful system, I can't justify toting a 17-incher around airports and tiny planes.

Below is the system I've configured. Coming out to just over $2K with tax and shipping. Wanted to post it first and ask a few questions to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious.

Processor: Intel Core Duo T2500 (2GHz)
OS: Windows MCE 2005
LCD: 15.4" UltraSharp Wide Screen SXGA+ with TrueLife
Memory: 2GB DDR2 533MHz SDRAM (It only $100 to upgrade from a single-DIMM 1GB. Checked around and the best I could find another 1GB stick was $77, before tax and s&h. Figured wasn't worth the hassle of the extra order and installation to save $10)
Video Card: 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon x1400
Hard Drive: 100GB 5400rpm SATA
Sound: Integrated SB Audigy
Wireless: Intel Pro 3945 and Dell 350 Bluetooth
Battery: Two 85 WHr 9-cell (have trouble finding outlets on most planes so figure I'd be needing this a bit)
Warranty: 3yr Ltd, At-Home Service, HW Warr Support plus Nights and Wknds (3 yrs was the minimum for the max EPP discount plus I figure if I resell it in 2 years, the extra year warranty might help it move faster)
Reinstall: For some reason, the website isn't offering me the option of the Windows CD with my discount. Question #1 is if anyone thinks it's worth calling and trying to coax it out of the sales rep on the phone or am I just SOL. I'd really rather not be stuck with the Dell/Symantec restore CD.

1b) If I do just have the Dell restore CD, is there any point to doing a reformat when I first boot it up? Or is the restore CD just going to dump all the bloatware back on.

2) The total comes to $2006.23 = $2697 - 593.34 (22% Inspiron discount) - 252.44 (12% EPP discount) + 155.01 (crazy NY taxes; shipping is free). Does that look like a good enough deal for that system? I tried pricing it up with the $750 off coupon (through Home & Home Office; wouldn't let me combine it with the EPP discount) and it came to $2228. Systems were identical except that I could drop the pre-installed McAfee with the EPP setup.

3) Went with the 5400rpm hard drive. Wouldn't mind the 7200rpm but don't want to pay up for it and then also have to suffer with shorter battery life and more heat. Anyone ever compare the power usage of the 5400 vs the 7200? How noticeable is the performance difference?

4) I've never used Windows MCE. Am I losing much performance, flexibility over XP Pro (what I've had for about the last 4 years)?

5) The reason I'm upgrading in the first place is to get better performance for the mid-high end games (high-end, in my opinion anyway). Anyone try out a system like the above on AoE3, RoN: T&P and RoL? The only one my Inspiron ran normally was RoN.

6) I'm getting a Dell because I've had one for most of the last 8 years and I like their service, discounts. Is there any other system out there I'm ignoring that'll be comparable in the same price range? Someone suggested I even look at a macbook pro running native XP but it looked too expensive (in addition to being a mac which have a something of an ideological difference with).

7) Anyone want to buy a 2-year old Dothan 1.8Ghz 8600? Still has a year of warranty on it. ;-)

Thanks all. Long, so I appreciate if you're still reading at this point. Would like to buy today (before the current deals run out) so any comments would be welcome.

Thanks,
OO

P.S. No need to answer question 7 (unless you want to wait a while). I'll probably post it in the For Sale section once I get my new one and transfer all the stuff over so may be some weeks yet before it pops up there.

well most if not all of these questions can be answered with the search button but,
1) restore cd= no bloatware, restore partition= all bloatware
2) 2228$ is about 1100$ more than id pay for that system, do your research.
3)5400/7200 little power difference, fo with the 7200 for max performance
4)MCE will not affect your new duo 2ghz!
5)dont be surprised when the x1400 is weak, because it is a low-mid level card
6) again, do your research
7)no try the for sale forum!

finally, if you spend that much on that computer, your wasting your hard earned money. 1300$ is the max price for all that crap on a 1505.

I got practically the same system as you, minus the 3yr warrenty and battery upgrades, plus a TV Tuner for $1350 after taxes. I used the $750 off $2000 deal. Dells website is sketchy, try configuring the mid and lower-end duo core system at Home and compare.

Two batteries and 3yr service is not worth $700 to me.

You can probably get extra batteries elsewhere for half of what dell would ask for.

First of all, nice system! (I actually just upgraded from an 8600 to a 1705 and LOVE it.)

1) You don't need to ORDER the Windows CD; Use this link for steps to have support mail you the CD's for free after you order:http://www.notebookforums.com/forums...d.php?t=102715

2) I would agree with the other posters that your price isn't great. Personally, this week's deal doesn't seem like a great one to me. I'd hold out for another if I were you. (You might also check Dell Outlet; I ended up getting a similarly specc'd e1705 with 3 year warranty and Complete Care for under $1,250 -- no 2GB memory but 7800go video.)

3) 7200 power difference is negligible. It's a good upgrade if you can afford it, but personally I'm holding off for the large 7200rpm drives to drop and then upgrading from newegg.

4) MCE is XP Pro minus the ability to join a domain. (Remote Desktop, etc is available.) You can even hack the registry and get domain functionality.

5) I think the x1400 should be ok for all the games you mentioned. I prefer the 7800go because all 256MB memory are dedicated, where 128MB of the x1400's RAM are shared with primary memory. That upgrade's not available on the e1505, though, so you'll have to settle for the x1400...

6) There are a lot of good laptops out there, but my feeling is that from a value standpoint, Dell can't be beat -- especially when you factor in the coupons / discounts they offer.

7) I'm selling mine, too...

I don't think there is a Dell/Symantec Restore CD. The restore function is loaded onto a third partition on your hard drive. It's accessed by hitting Ctrl-F11 during boot, no CD necessary. It restores your PC to factory settings with all the bloatware.

I wish I knew how to burn that partition onto a bootable DVD. Might be nice if I ever wanted to sell my laptop in factory fresh condition (without having to leave that 5 GB partition on the drive).

The Dell Operating System Reinstallation DVD is what you want to do a clean install. I think you already know that, so I'm probably just arguing terminology.

2) My E1505 config was T2400 (2MB/1.83GHz/667MHz), sxga+ tl screen, 1gb 2dimm ram, x1400, 60gb 7200rpm hdd, dvd burner, intel 3945, bluetooth, 2 batteries (one 6, one 9 cell), 4 year warranty with complete care, and the MCE disk for around $1450. Not the best price I've seen for that configuration, but respectable. As for yours, $2k is way too much to pitch out for that configuration. I'd wait for a better EPP deal to come around. I got mine with the EPP discount and the 750 off along with some other thing I forget.

3)From my experience, 7200 is somewhat noticably faster, just don't expect it to be amazingly faster than 5400. As far as battery life goes, I've never heard of the difference being over maybe 15 minutes at most, but thats just me.

4) MCE works perfectly smoothly for me and isn't any slower than pro

5) I play RoL at settings of medium resolution (the 1200x800 or whatever it is) with medium-low settings and its quite smooth. Sure, its not gorgeous, but the resolution is still quite sharp on the sxga+ screen and its more than pretty enough to play well and enjoy. If you manage to OC your graphics card well, you can probably bump the settings up a bit too.

I just opened my box with my new 1505 in it. I used the 750 off coupon and paid about 1300.00 I sold my M1710 becuase it really wasn't a perfect fit for what I use my laptop for. I am quite happy with this lappy. 1:45 min battery life of the M1710 just made life too difficult for me and the 17" monitor (sweet display) just made the system too bulky for daily travel. I guess I was asking for too much when trying to get a killer gaming laptop as well as something I could use on the road. I think the 1505 will be a much better fit and with the truelife screen I am quite pleased with the display. I also went with MCE over pro, mostly because I have XP pro already and never have used MCE. I don't need to join my office domain I get get all I need off the VPN with home version. (although I hate home version) I found calling and speaking to a rep is far better than just checking the website. I got some additional free items and got free shipping as well. (free shipping wasn't offered on the web that day)

I agree that speaking to a rep is the better way to go. I used to just order everything online but the reps will sometimes give you good suggestions and extra goodies. Additionally, don't they have some thing where if you refer the rep to other people, they extend your discounts to the referals too?

Hmm.. kinda makes my $600 E1505 look pretty weak.

Thanks for your (mostly) helpful comments.

I did check out the outlet and the systems actually come out to the same ballpark when I add back in the stuff I wanted that's missing (better video card, bigger HD, more RAM/expansion space) but I can probably shave off another hundred dollars or more with a better deal. The 40% coupon seems rare but if I had it, I could get down to about $1800, all-in. Checked eBay for it and found some friendly folks selling the $750 off $1999 coupon you can find by logging on to the Dell website.

Probably going to hold out on the 7200rpm HDDs. Good call on waiting for the price drop, especially since my price tag is already bloated as is.

Will call the rep though and see if there's anything else I can wrangle out to convince me to order now (another good piece of advice). Otherwise, I'll probably wait a while for a better deal. Very difficult to do though when you have unplayable games waiting on your desk but I'll try!

Thanks again everyone.

For that price, you could get a better spec'd D820.

You should upgrade the ram buy getting ram from newegg. I'm not sure where you got the "only $100 to upgrade to 2GB" because I see it costs $234 to upgrade to 2GB now.

To use the Dell outlet proprerly, you have to camp it for hours, checking it at 40 after the hour. Around 38 after to 42 after, refresh your browser over and over, then when you see a cheap computer pop up add it to your cart immediately, then press back and try to add more. Then review them if they are good enough.

hey, if he wants to spend 2000$ on a e1505, i guess thats his business.

but a decked out e1505 can cost no more than 1300$ with 2yr and coupons.

Hey chevyrulz099, if you're offering one with the specs I'm looking for at, say, $1600, I'll buy it from you right now. You can pocket the extra $300. I can't figure out for the life of me how to get lower otherwise. What do you think?

[b]i got all the cd,s on my inspiron 6400, including the diagnostic disk,...i chatted with dell,, and they sent me 5 cds..just like to have all the software on cd,s

ya,,the power difference between the 5400 and 7200 should be minimal

i am going to upgrade the ram and hardrive myself,,though its nice to order it with everything in place.

not into extended warrantys,,if my notebook breaks,,i will fix it myself

seems like 1 gb of ram should be enough,,,,

my 2 cents worth

i ram 2004 unrealtorment with a x1300,,plays it very well...madonion 2001 scores in the low 7000,s
