D900 hinge report (9860, 9890, 9750, etc)

Can anyone that's had a D900 chassis for a while give a report on how well the hinges are holding up?

Every laptop i've seen with plastic hinges that was used heavily for a few years have cracked to some degree. Just curious how the D900 chassis is fairing.

I had the 1st D900T off the line and I have yet any issue with the hinges on mine.

I pre-ordered my 9860 before they started shipping. I only infrequently take it out of my home, but the hinges are fine and the construction is holding up quite well for my usage. Wish I could could say the same about the stuff inside, but that's another story...

I have owned my 9860 for about a year and 3 months and the hinges are fine on mine.

I've had my 9860/80 for 15 months and have no hinge problems. I travel with it frequently, in and out of airports, hotels, and work locations. No hinge problems yet. But like Starcub says above, the inside stuff is another story.

Thanks for the replies. It's all good news so far.

I was disappointed to see my brother's 4750 with severely cracked hinges recently. He can be a bit abusive, tho.

Good news except for that important likeness in their comments about "the stuff inside" lol

besides motherboard issues the hinges are not cracked on mine, although they are too tight. is there any way to losen them up?

My 8790's not on your list, but it has small cracks above the hinges. They're from me pulling the 8790 out of it's carrying bag. Apparently the plastic didn't like the power I was using (I don't have huge hands). Just something to pay attention to for those that haven't had any problems yet.

I have the 9860 (got it May of 2005 EDIT: maybe it was June) and the hinges are starting to come loose. The plastic on the far-right corner is cracking around a screw and I'm trying to see what can be done about it.

Haha, didn't expect to see this thread pop up again. It's been over a year now and I haven't had any problems with the hinges on my 9750. Same as when I bought it. I've been pretty careful and I don't travel much with it so that probably makes a difference.

Hope you're able to work out the problem, JD.

Sorry to hear that, Cronin. I've had my 9860/9890 since November 2004 (when it fist came out), and I've had no hinge problems. So having the computer for almost 29 months without any hinge issue seems pretty good. Although I have had the motherboard replaced twice, but everything else has been working flawlessly.

4 images detailing my problem

The hinge cover goes back in place when I'm not opening the lid anymore. The cracks around the screw on the back of the laptop. It is hard to show here, but the part of the hinge that goes down into the base of the laptop tends to rock, or pivot when I'm opening or closing the lid. This one shows how the hinges shift and put strain on the plastic casing when I'm opening the lid (notice the hairline fracture below the middle of the hinge post). I emailed Sager Technical support (BTW, I didn't show them these pictures because I just took them).

I tried tightening the screw on the bottom of the laptop that is underneath the hinge, but it didn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

Does this sound like the right part? Edit: I sent the pictures to Sager and they said

From the pictures look like is the top case had crack not the LCD back cover, that cover is $ 55
but, I'm not concerned so much about the cosmetics, but what is causing it to crack... I emailed them asking if that would fix it... Awaiting their reply. Edit: Edit: I have an extended warranty plan and I called them a month ago and they said that most hinge problems are due to a manufacturing defect (not covered by the warranty) but I called them again, yesterday, and the person on the phone was more knowledgeable. SO... I'm going to be able to get it serviced under warranty. BTW, those parts suggested by Sager seem to be just for the outside, not actually going to fix the main problem that caused it to break. -Jordan

I've had mine since Sep 05, it goes back and forth to work everyday so it gets used LOT. No hinge or other cosmetic type problems at all... just the internals (the usual MB, gfx card, etc.)

Hinges on my 9750 (bought Apr'06) seem to be holding up well. I open/close it at least twic e a day in my home/work routine. I am babying my laptop somewhat though.

This issue plagued some of the older Sager models but is more specific. You can find tons of info by doing a simple thread search for hinges. Anyway, this issue is normally caused by improper hinge tension set by the manufacturer. This combined with the pressure of the user closing the lid quickly can cause small hairline fractures that can grow over time. If this is the case with your notebook it will have to be sent out for repairs(cosmetic), and to have the hinge tension adjusted by a proper tech, which isn't easy. You may be able to get instructions on how to do this from Sager, but it is generally recommended to be professionally done.
