Need opinions for Acer 5672

Thread Starter
Hey, I would first like to say Hello, as it is my first post here. I've been browsing these pages for the last week or so, looking for a laptop.

I am looking to purchase my First laptop I was particularly interested at the Acer 5672.
I am a somewhat "serious" gamer. I play Guild Wars, WoW, CS:S, and looking to have a laptop that can run these and some future games well.

For the laptops., I am somewhat a "noob" when it comes to all these processors. Which one is good and decent for the value? Do I need a 256 mb card ? (I'm using a ATI x600 256mb atm). Budget wise, I'm looking at something with a max MAX total of $1600 (Candian Dollars).

So for you laptop pros, what do you think would be a good buy? Should I go with the Acer? Or do you think in the budget at 15-15.4", there is a better company.

If I left out anything, let me know

Thanks a lot

Andrew

Andrew - there is a 5672 model that fits your bill perfectly:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...nufacture=Acer
It is the 5672 but with an upgraded card - much better than what the 5672 is currently shipping with (x1600 vs current x1400). It should be available the end of this month- its what i would go for.

Hmmm, very interesting, going to look into that, Thanks Madcat!

Not a problem! If you do get it, let us know, as you would be one of the first 5672/x1600 owners (and benchmarks of the new machine would REALLY be appreciated!)

Once again, that is not totally true - I can play BF2 @ 1280x800 medium settings/high textures, and i can hold 30-50 fps... certainly playale by most standards.

Of course, once i get a chance, i will upgrade my mobo an x1600 variant ASAP, so the point isnill anyway.

uhh well playing games at half the detail is only playing half the game because you are missing alot of effects, thats not really playing at all. to get the full expirience of the game everything needs to be set to high.
Nah. If i really want things at FULL detail, that is why i have a desktop. I have a laptop so i can take all my stuff on the go, with the understanding that somethings may have to be sacrificed.

And relaly BF2 at medium still looks damn good, so what do i care? I guess i can't speak for other games, but BF2 is more than enjoyable..

I must agree with Divine, you can't rely completely on the graphics to make a game great.
gameplay is more important than anything, take my kids , they are in their late teens and are not impressed by fancy effects (with the exception of the upcoming Crysis game, as they thought they were photos LOL) but they need games that play well for example , they still play final fantasy 7 because in their opinion its the best one ever. We also do a lot of retro gaming in our house, I have Vic20's, C64's, Amigas, Sega Master System/MEgadrive/Gamegear and an atari 2600!!!

I play HL2 and FEAR on my 5672 with the x1400 and after a driver update to either Omega Or DHZeropoint drivers, I get a big increase in speed, and decent fps

I too will be upgrading my motherboard to the x1600 one as soon as I can afford it

Well it's official! My 5672 with the x1600 will be in Tuesday! I cannot wait!

We demand the benchmarks!!!

Actually, i more demand pictures. Is there any way you can get some nice, high res pictures of all the sides, bottom included? And if you could, with the main bottom plate removed (don't worry, it wont void your warrenty!). It will help me determine for the other users here if we will need anything besides the new mobo for our own upgrades (updated heatsink, different bottom plate, that sort of thing).

Sure, just tell me how :P
Would be my pleasure

Quick question, is it possible to change the DVD drives on laptops? I would like to get a LightScribe

Thanks

Mine should be here on tuesday and I'll post all the pics you want

Filiab,

It's not possible to change out the DVD drive for a lightscribe drive -- I've already checked because that's the only gripe I've got with the system. I spoke with Acer about it and they said that it's not a tray loading drive... so I'm thinking it's some internal drive like they have in car CD players... sucks the disc in, etc.

Ah, okay thanks for that heads up

Cannot wait!!!!

Would you guys like the benchmarks done in 3DMark2001 SE? -- That's the only program I've got at the moment, and I'll run them once I get the system and get it going.

To remove the bottom plate (assuming the bottom is still the same hopefully) There will be 7 screws holding down and obviously large plate. Simply remove them (they are philips head), and then gently pull up on it from the front. The plate will just pop off at that point.

I really appreciate it (and i hope it works well for you!!!)

Will do. Also what kind of scores would you like me to take Pre format and post format?

Acer 5672 with X1600 starting to appear in the usual places.

Its seems a lot of e-stores have received the new improved 5672!

Acer Model # LX.ATD05.014

www.pricegrabber.com shows...... as low as 1127.xx from very reputable dealers.

I have dealt with page several times. No issues to date.

I am patiently awaiting to see the SRP on the ferarri,

I am deciding between the ferrari 5000, 8204, asus Z96J, and maybe even this.

Im all over the place. I have been logging a lot of hours here and nbr doing my homework.

God, the W3J is eligant and refined.

HELP!

I havent bought a lappy in years, Im on an Vaio FX210 *First AMD based laptop from sony* The batteries last 2 minutes, Thats both of them. The AC jack is cracked and dangling. Its almost time. I just got a severence package from my company and was lucky enough to start work within 2 days. So I have about 2.5k budget for a lappy. Although i think I would be fine spending 1.5k

Oh well just ranting on.
