The gsferrari 5660 review - Page 2

I have to agree...this is an excellent running review. Btw, I have a Sony DEJ01 (only side loading portable cd player ) and it also had the problems you mentioned with CD-Text. I also ran into the same enthusiasm when a nero-burned disc showed text.

More Important : DEAD PIXELS

Leave the games and stuff for the moment. I've noticed several newbies asking away and that is absolutely fine - It would help to look around a little for the information you want before you post because sometimes the answer is just a few threads away

However considering how much the forums has grown in the last few weeks I am sympathetic because most of the time I am hard pressed to find the information I need. Which is part of the reason why I created this thread - I call to all 5660 owners to post links to valuable 5660 information that I might have missed.

This way any newcomer can be directed here to find all related info under one thread.

DEAD PIXEL ISSUE

Anyone considering buying a Laptop has to be sure they know what they are in for before chumming the sharks.

The most worrying issue is the DEAD PIXEL - DP issue. LCD screens like those found on Laptops are very different from the CRT's of conventional desktop systems.

You can read about the basics of LCD's by clicking here : http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache...hl=en&ie=UTF-8

Once you have read this article you will understand what Dead Pixels are and why a few of them are considered acceptable.

By placing your order with any brand (DELL, SAGER, TOSHIBA) you are bound by their policies which you are assumed to have read before you made your decision. I advise all newbies to read the policy and the fine print before showing the cash.

The Sager policy is 5 or more dead pixels. Some brands have a policy of 6 or more and others as many as 10.

Like mentioned in the article - It is difficult to ensure everyone gets a flawless screen - doing so will cause LCD prices to skyrocket.

If you do get a screen that is flawed you have a few options (to be blunt) :-

1] Accept it if it is not annoying (like in the center of the screen) and enjoy your laptop because most of the time you will not know it is there until you look for one.

2] Return it and get your money back and try your luck again. Sager cant really choose your screen so dont hate them for it. Until the manufacturing process is revised I dont see this issue changing in the near future.

Some interesting reading related to dead pixels :-

These threads should keep you reading until my next post

We'll get to the games as soon as I get to test Unreal - havent even opened it yet - been playing Hitman 2 and Commandos 2 and of course - F1-2002

It is an excellent review :-) This is how the review section will become most useful, now that there are detailed reviews for the three most prominent systems, and more coming. People who want to see if Sager is right for them can do so without hesitation.

Keep up the great work :-)

What do you mean by this:
"Of course - as a result of a couple of goof-ups (I did not select 10GB of memory during OS install and therefore after everything was over I had only 40 something GB HDD space - solution - reinstall XP)"

I won't be installing my own OS, but I want thinking about partitioning my OS into one partition and my data into another partition. Can you explain what you meant by that, cause I've never partitioned before....

Also, beebster, can you tell me what you did with your partitioning? You are where I got this idea... Thanks!
I partitioned my 40 gig drive into 30 gigs and 10 gigs... 30 is for the OS and programs that I install (games, etc). I install programs in the default Program Files directory, so I like to leave lotsa space for the OS. The 10 gigs is for my data. It's more than enough for my documents, pictures, songs, etc.... If I had more stuff, I'd make it 25 15... But I'm fine like this. I used Partition Magic 8 to do it... it's a nice program. Let me know if you need any help/specifics.

I'm also wondering about that statement about memory :-)

Clarification

During OS install in a new system you are given partitioning options.

The system displays the total amount of HDD memory available in the unpartitioned format - you proceed by partitioning this total HDD memory into smaller fragments in the way you deem fit.

For me the system showed : 57232 MB Unpartitioned Space
I started with the 7232 MB : 7232 MB C: OS and System
and 5 drives of 10000 MB : 10000 MB D: Applications
: 10000 MB E: Programming Tools
: 10000 MB F: Media Files
: 10000 MB G: Games
: 10000 MB H: General Data

This lets me organize stuff more efficiently.
This is how things are as of now.

What happened the first time :-

I started with 7232, 10000, 10000, 10000, 10000 and then did not allocate the last 10000 - as a result of which I did not have the H: and lost that 10GB of space - never showed up in the windows "My Computer".

So I began the tedious process of installing the OS again. I am sure there must have been some other way but hey - I am stupid

Hope this clarifies everything...

For managing that many partitions you really should consider a utility like Partition Magic 8.0. You'd have been able to take care of that last 10 GB easily, as well as add, delete, and merge partitions at will very easily. It's not exactly cheap, but it works great. If the Beebster uses it could it be bad??

Wiser now

Well...there...

Something new learnt and something gained - you see how these forums work!! Awesome...

I am trying to create a post with all the benchmarks from Sandra. Lessee if I can have it in by this afternoon...

And 3Dmark as well....

Maybe some screenshots from a few games...

Windows XP Pro (not sure about home) and Windows 2000 come with a disk management utilitly that allows you to partition unpartitioned space, format, rename drive letters, etc. It does not, however, allow you to resize partitions on the fly like partition magic does. It is a useful utility though.

You can get to it through START->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management. Then under storage in the lefthand pane is 'Disk Management'.

Or instead of going through the control panel you can right click on 'My Computer' and click 'manage' to get to the Computer Management utilitly and then proceed to the Disk Management utility.

Fantastic!!

Great job Jeah!!

Never bothered to look This should be far easier and you may be able to avoid the additional cost of a third party partitioning software.

I will see if I can test how this works. I am planning on sending my laptop in for the screen replacement this thursday and should have it back before the next thursday.

If I can I will do a XP re-installation - no major data on my HDD anyway other than a few games - make a backup for the saved games and then do the test...

Wow!

One thing I recommend is keeping games installed with the OS... The reason for this is that if you format and reinstall the OS, you will have to reinstall the games as well (the registry no longer has them... and yes, there are ways to get by this, but they're tedious and often sloppy... and sloppiness is NOT what you want in a registry). Therefore, I've made a point of always installing programs in the Program Files directory. Others see it differently :-) But I thought I'd express the reasoning behind why it might be a good idea for some.

is making partitions on your hardrive faster/better in some way than just making like 5 folders on your desktop (one big 60GB) that hold games, apps, etc? 1 60GB vs 6 10Gb partitions?

Memory addresses

It will be faster to make partitions because the addresses allocated to each of the drives you create as a result of partitioning will make the HDD access times faster.

Its like everyone in the USA having addresses like this :-

1] gsferrari - 1887309487097209E2399843CD88
2] beebster - 987203958702938E987u230HHJ

vs.

the easier addressing system like this :-

1] gsferrari - florida - tampa - 13726
2] noname - newyork-9729

Also - partitioning will reduce the amount of "Lost - Space" on your drives. Most of the time you will not be able to use 100% of your drive because some of it will be lost. You minimize this by creating partitions.

I prefer to keep OS separate from the rest of the data to improve system performance. IMO - when you have all system files together and in one Drive - the performance is better than when you have them mixed up with all your files...

I am having a spot of trouble uploading pictures...lessee...

Some screenshots

I have posted some screenshots on the website : http://www.gsferrari.cjb.net/

These are jpg so imagine the deterioration in quality - then try to imagine what these must have looked like realtime on the screen during the game!!!

MAN!!

Congratulations, man.

That's a really nice review you've got going.
Keep it up!

Not completely. The fever still won't go away. I'm on more daily pills than a geriatric diabetic hundred-year-old. Anyway, indeed everything one might want is in here.

Cheers.
