Windows Vista transition

Gentlemen, Allan, David and Esteemed Folks at Sager resellers:

I ran the Microsoft program which does an analysis of a computer to determine its readiness for Windows Vista.

I’m pleasantly surprised to find that the 9860 can run the Windows Aero system.

However, I’m concerned about the following components which need upgrading:

1.WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE Controller from Promise Technology
2.802.11g MiniPCI Wireless Network Adapter from Ralink Technology
3.Smart Link 56K Voice Modem from Smartlink
4.HP PSC 2170 printer (I can handle this one myself)
So, my question is, will Sager or Powernotebooks be posting the new drivers?

Will there be instructions on how to install the new drivers?

I’m PARTICULARLY CONCERNED about the Promise SATA 378 IDE Controller driver as unless I have that Vista driver already installed, how will I even be able to install Vista????

Please take a moment to answer and post answers on the forum.

Thank you

My previous experience with Microsoft Windows retail purchases is that their OS includes drivers even for cutting edge hardware that might not even be on store shelves when the OS ships. As it is, I can download XP drivers for my 9860's wireless device and modem directly from Microsoft's web site. Additionally, the Promise SATA controller (post XP SP2) is mainstream hardware now in wide circulation, so I expect it will be recongnized by Vista. Neither can I imagine there being an HP printer that MS would not include drivers for in Vista.

Well the 9860 was not built with Vista in mind. There was no solid information on the hardware that Vista would work on.

As for No 1. - You need to put the WinXP ATA/RAID drivers in root directory of the floppy. I know the ATA ones works but can't say if the RAID ones work.

If you one of the people who had problem with KB888111 then you will have problems with Vista. The Smartlink/Realtek Drivers will not work because of the KB888111 problem. Since KB888111 is built into Vista you can't work around it as of yet. I tried all sorts of things. Installing the optional Smartlink Drivers from Vista Windows Update kills the machine and I had to reinstall Vista. So I never installed them again. The Beta Realtek Drivers from Realtek do install but when it boots the drivers do not work. The only thing I have not tried is unplugging the Smartlink's power supply / connection. But not sure if that can be done as I have not looked under the keyboard yet to see if it is possible. I'm not taking the laptop apart to fix this problem. Hopefully those that do not have the KB888111 problem will get the Smartlink/Realtek Drivers to work together.

I wouldn't worry about it. They are probably working with drivers now. I had to periodically re-install Windows 98SE using Dell provided drivers for my 6 year old Dell Inspiron 7500. When I got XP after I recieved my 9860, I tried it out on my I7500 and not only was all the hardware detected automatically by XP, the whole system ran even better than it did with 98SE and Dell drivers.

It's now about 18 months after the release of the 9860, and the hardware is now state of the art. Hardware vendors typically send drivers and tech info for their products to Microsoft before product release for certification purposes, so I'm certain MS is working on them. I expect the drivers will be completed by the time Vista is released. In fact, I expect drivers will be built into Vista for the upcoming 64-bit intel architectures as well as the next gen vid processors from ATI and NVidia as these products will likely be released at the same time Vista is.

No, the problem only occurs with the early MB of the 9860. I'm betting none of the 9880s or 9890s have the problem. This board is really slow loading toda.

This is a [partially edited] email that I sent to Sager about an hour ago...
along with an [automated?] response just a few minutes after (see below).

Dear Sager,

I plan to install Windows Vista Ultimate on my Sager NP9860 but noticed that your
support site does not offer any drivers for this operating system. Do you have plans
to release Windows Vista Drivers for the NP9860 / D900T notebook? If so, when will
they be available?

Also, will Vista install properly on the NP9860 notebook (using the built in Vista drivers)?

Sager's reply....

Subject: Windows Vista Drivers for NP9860? (Case:8345)

Sorry, NO Vista Drivers and NOT Planning to have Vista Drivers for model:NP9860.
