MP3 Audio Recording on E1505 - can it be done?

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up MP3DirectCut to record audio from Rhapsody, but it doesn't appear that the audio is running through my software.

I've read plenty about how lousy the SigmaTel interface is, so it appears as though I have no way of checking the feed of the source audio. I've also read that here is no internal mic in the Dells.

I'm pretty new to all this, but does all this mean that I will not be able to record music on my new Dell?

Or should I try some other software, such as Audacity?

Any suggestions, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Ron

I use Tunebite and Audacity and it works very good for me

Shof,

Can you provide details about how you got Audacity (or Tunebite) to work on your Dell? Just like MP3DirectCut, neither of these programs seem to recognize the SigmaTel sound card, and neither the line in or microphone input settings are sending any sound through the recording software.

Thanks again,
Ron

Any sound that you hear from your PC speakers is coming from your soundcard. Therefore, you can capture it. But, you may need to play around with some settings first....

Control Panel>Sounds and audio devices>Audio tab>Sound playback and/or Sound recording.... Make sure your soundcard is selected in the pull-down menu, then click on the volume buttons and check the Options>Properties for the correct settings.

In Audacity>Preferences>Audio I/O tab....

set the playback device to your soundcard and the recording device to MS soundmapper.

There this is setting called What U Hear, like around for it. Here is a pages that use a similar method:

Odious, I'm using the exact settings you're suggesting, still nothing.

And Sho, I couldn't find a "What you hear" option, but the pulldown menu that your link suggests gives me two options, line in or microphone, and neither have any effect.

I'll keep doing more research on my end. In the mean time, any other ideas?

Thanks again for all your help...

I happened upon your thread because my wife is having the same problem with her e1505, and I'm trying to solve it.

I'm not real tech-savvy, so please excuse any mishandling of the lingo. I've been told her e1505 came equipped with a chip, not a sound card. I looked up the info and saw that the e1505 came with a SigmaTel audio codec, not the SigmaTel C-Major card my Inspriron 6000 came with. The codedc apparently does not support recording, or have a "stereo mix" option.

We did not specifically ask about recording when we bought it. We assumed that all computers could handle a simple enough task.

I am told that my best solution is to purchase an external sound card like Sound Blaster, etc. That's what I'm going to do, and hopefully it will work. The Sound Blaster I've been pointed to is about $90 at online stores and plugs into the PCMCIA port. Others I've found (Turtle Beach Amigo, $40) are cheaper and use the USB ports.

Hope I got the info right. Good luck with your audio issues.

No, you're absolutely right. That's what I discovered as well. Dell seems to be going that route with many of their systems. My older Dell had a card, but both my personal, and my work laptops don't. Fortunately, I have access to an HP with a card, so I didn't need to purchase an external one.

Good luck!

the sigmatel c major driver + the creative audio mb driver from dell worked for me for stereo mix, but that's in XP. I can't get stereo mix in vista and I'm not sure if installing that creative driver will still work
