Area 51m 7700 (Pre Dell) Cooling options/ideas?

Hey all,
Ive had my alienware 7700 lappy for about a year now. Ive always known and read that it produces a lot of heat but still bought it as its simply the most powerful/sickest laptop on the market. I replaced the cheap thermal pads on the video card with acrtic silver as some people on this forum have suggested. Then I spent 90 bucks on a titan laptop cooler, one of the only ones on new egg thats big enough to support a desktop replacement laptop (and although there is three fans on the cooler, the vent is not large enough to accomodate all of the exaust fans on the bottom of the alienware). I did this all with no avail, and now, Im just getting tired of how damn hot the left side of the keyboard gets (thanks nvidia 6800 ultra go! lol). I havent even been using it to game recently, just to download torrents, surf and watch divx movies, and still its blazingly hot, even while idle. So has anybody come up with an actual fix for this problem? More so than comfort and annoyance, I leave my computer on most of the time and I dont want to shorten the life span and/or performance of a $3200+ laptop due to these heat issues. Id love to be able to rock some kind of water cooling, but for a notebook, Ive never heard of anything available like this. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I took my cpu and graphics card heatsink out and cleaned out all the dust (probably a handful) and re-applied better thermal compound and it runs about 20degrees cooler!

It even powers down the fans from time to time now! Before it was constantly at max..

I have an Area 51m 7700 with the ATI 800xt card and find I need to clean out the dust about once a month. The first time I cleaned it was about four months after I got it. I took it apart and reseated the vid card as per an Alienware customer service rep’s instructions and since then I have just blown out the air passages with compressed air. I have an air compressor in my basement so I have a pretty good blast, although I don’t recommend that for everyone. I crank the regulator down to about the minimum then carefully blow in through the exhaust vents so the dust comes back out the fan openings. Under general use (websurfing, playing .mp3’s and videos, using office products) the GPU stays around 59-60°c. Most people think its warm but I am used to it. It has been quite a while since I checked temps while gaming but it does get quite a bit warmer then, but not to the point of being uncomfortable.

Well, I am just happy to hear that I may not be the only one with their graphics card overheating. Alienware is sending me thermal gel, which will hopefully solve the problem. I also had a problem with one of my RAM sticks, and a replacement has been put on order today. I have to hand it to them, they are very understanding

By the way, my laptop is similair to yours. $3500 and a year old, but I do not have an Ultra card. Call up customer support and see what they say, you will rarely be put on hold for more than a couple minutes, I have only been placed on hold three times and it was a very short wait. Although, their middle-eastern accents are a bit hard to understand at times, I am pretty happy with the support.

As for cooling pads, why is it that nobody can provide me with actual statistics in a decrease of temperature while using them? I still refuse to buy one, as it sounds like overhyped bull :P

Why does it matter that your Alienware 7700 is Pre-Dell? Does it make it better somehow?
