Dude, I'm in the same situtaion as you. I have the standard burner but wanto upgrade too. If you could get the dvd burner model number from another M5500 owner we can go to ebay and buy it from there and switch the bezel and we have a burner. The reason i rather have a desktop burner is that laptop dvd burner make a lot of noise, and it's not reliable in my opinion. I'm probably going to get a usb dvd burner instead.

I have a DVD burner on my m5500. Works great. Have you considered calling Alienware to get one? They are usually very good about selling upgrades.

not if you didnt purchase it from them

Alienware will sell drives as upgrade parts if you're the original customer. Any upgrade parts you buy from Alienware are covered by your warranty, and they sell upgrades to existing customers at "vendor cost". That's usually about 10% less than retail.

Unfortunately, they don't sell upgrades at a discount to other than original customers, and they don't carry some parts for discontinued models out of warranty. You can buy may components through Alienware's gear shop though whether you're an existing customer or not.

You can call Alienware and ask what drives they use. Then either buy one from them or look elsewhere for the particular part.

Ask a M5500 owner who has the DVD rw and ask them kindly if they can give you the model name of the DVD burner, and buy that same burner on ebay. hope that helps.

Reviving an old thread.

Anyone ever find out the DVD-RW models?
I just acquired a M5500 with a combo drive that I'd love to swap
out for a dvd burner.

If you purchased it directly from AW you can order it from them. Otherwise, you can check these stores.

It also depends on the type of system you have, you need to tell them if its either the older m5500 (766) or the newer m55xx they currently have on their website.

Thanks for the links...but I didn't get it from AW. The unit is apprx 6 months old.

If anyone with a can peer at the DVD-RW in their system properties and
tell me what they have, it would be very helpful. (Example: After market NEC ND-6000 series fit in most of Dell's laptops with the use of the original bezel.)

Eureka!!!!

I found one verified and confirmed.

Lite-On SOSW-852S

This DVD-RW drive can be used with the M5500's bezel.
I got the info from a company selling parts for the Uniwill 259,
which we all already know the M5500 is a 259 in disguise.
I'll be on the look out for one on ebay, newegg, ect...and let everyone
know if it worked out.
