Is there a 14'' Wide book with power?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a 14'' wide screen notebook with lots of power. I want it mostly for taking notes and hard core gaming but when I Build a new e14 from dell or look on any other sites I can get a 17'' thats just about as powerfull as my desktop for 1249 (with 750 off dell coupon) - 1600 bucks. The 14'' with the same spec - graphics cards are lower than that.

I want a 14'' desktop replacement I guess something that will run games like Counter-Strike Source, HL2, Doom3, World of warcraft and I can bring home and just dock to a 21'' flat panel monitor and use my wirless keyboard and mouse. Is there anything out there that fits my recomendations? Right now I'm looking at the dell e17 but thats so big. Its as powerfull as my computer -64 bit and 2 gigs of ram but I think the duo core is faster than 64 bit. I have 2.0 ghz athlon and this one was 1.8 duo. I also want blue tooth I have been looking at the asus W3J. Sorry for the spelling errors in this I'm in a rush

As you guessed it, your best bet is the w3j; at the moment, it's the best performance you'll get out of a 14" system.

asus w3j: core duo 2.0 and radeon x1600

I have been looking hard at the ASUS W3J since it surfaced. It seems to be the perfect combination of power & portability for us mobile gamers. I really wanted the M1710, but it is not exactly portable. I am an Airline Pilot & would like something that I could have with me all the time.
I have seen a machine with similar specs to the W3J, but it has an NVidia GO 7600 card with 512mb VRAM.
Anybody have any firm opinions on which is better for gaming...the ATI 1600 or the NVidia 7600???

As far as I've seen, the the X1600 and the nVidia 7600 seem to compare so closely that it doesn't matter which one you choose.

I'd say that the x1600 is probably more on par with an nVidia 7800. So, it would be just a little more powerful than the 7600. BTW, do you have a company/model for the machine with the Go 7600?

The X1600 is definitely not on par with the X1800. Depending on the game (X1600 has more pixel pipes, but less ROPS compared to the Go 7600) the X1600 and Go 7600 should generally trade performance advantage, assuming they're clocked around the same.

I'd actually suggest the ASUS A8JM over than the W3J. It's cheaper than the W3J and comes with a Go 7600, so is comparable in terms of performance. But the biggie here is that the W3J comes with your regular RGB analogue monitor connector while the A8JM has a DVI connector. This is a pretty big advantage especially if that 21" LCD you're planning to hook it up to is digital.

It is the ASUS A8JM. Portable One are carrying the same machine under the name Portable One MXA8JM. Link here:

Quite an intruguing machine if you want Power AND portability!!

What do you folks think?

The Benq S73 is also a Core Duo MR X1600 laptop:

I guess it's much cheaper than the Asus.

Asus w3j: x1600 256mb dedicated
Asus A8jm: Nvidia 7600 512mb dedicated
Compal HGL30: Nvidia 7600 256mb dedicated.

And that's all the options you have in the US for a powerful 14".
out of these 3 only the Compal is a whitebook/barebone.. the other 2 are pre-configured/ensembles.

from what I understand, the A8Jm blows the w3j out of the water when it comes to gaming performance. 3Dmark05 scores over 4100 without OC'ing anything. The s96j and similarly spec'd X1600s can only get up to around 3600 without OC'ing. Ditto for 256MB 7600's. Now if they'd only sell the A8Jm in the U.S.!

Cheers,
Jarrod

I'm not sure where your data from because their 3dmark05 scores are roughly the same with out OC'ing. To be more specific, an ATi x1600 with 256mb actually gets slightly higher than an Nvidia Go 7600 with 512mb dedicated. And the A8Jm is sold in the US as the Portable One MX.

Does anyone have benchmarks on both the W3J and the A8Jm to compare? I would really like to see them.

check notebookforums.ca and notebookreview, milestonepc did a comparison of both.. they were real close in terms of battery life and 3dmarks.
