I'm interested in a red lid for the m1710 when you get them. Also is the personalization shield for the m170 and the m1710 the same?

For the red panel top, the part number is: CF208. For the black top one: RG723. And from what I hear and saw, the personalization shield should work for ALL XPS 17 inch notebook models, from old (XPS Gen 2/M170) to new (XPS M1710). Not sure if dell has them available yet, but I bet they're uber expensive from them. I saw a few on ebay but as usual, they sell quickly.

Edit, and yeah, I assume that the 1710 back lid should fit your M170. The framework for the screen, antenna, etc. are the same as the old models (despite what dell tells you), but yeah. give it a try and if you are able to get it, post pics of your mod

Actually, you will also need the front bezel from the M1710. While the screw holes are teh same, the snap connects are not. I learned this when i modded my 9300 to an M90 case - same size, but you need the front bezel. Thankfully, that part is cheap..

Well, you wont notice unless you have both backs open to compare. But as i said, you can get it for around 10 bucks, and should be all you need.
