Thisisa well known issue, the built in wireless has given several people problems, seems liek the best suggestion is to just disable it and go with an external pcmcia card...

the netgear ones seem to have great results...

if you doa search of the forums you can find a lot of posts onthis

best tips on internal wireless card:

-First off, make sure you are using the AW drivers, not the ones that come from windows update. Uninstall the driver for the card, and pick the driver from the AW folder that you get off their website.

-Second, make sure your wires are connected. If you are brave, take the keyboard off (shown in the manual) and take off the metal cover plate on the left. There should be a black and silver wire connected to the card underneath. If they are connected, try reversing them, if not, connect them.

-Win XP in general has problems with wireless cards. If there are more than one wireless network in the area, then it will keep dropping it and looking for other ones. There are a few ways of solving this. Once you connect to the WAP, go into the wireless properties and turn off windows auto configure. With this method, you will have to re-enable it every time you want to reconnect. The other is to use the program that came with the driver. Disable windows auto config, and set up the wireless connection in the program. I have found that when I use that program, I never get dropped from the WAP.

Hope I haven’t confused you

I was just reading about this on the AW support forum... AW-Warner offered up a link to Intel http://www.intel.com/support/network...205-prd944.htm I made this change and my wifi service is cranking. I have already done everything else in the tips post on this (including messing with the wires). Try it all and see if it works for you.

So far so good, I'll use it for a couple of days and see what I think.

Read the Intel page...I dont get it. The changes they are saying to make are on my pc, or on the router config?

Do you have the latest drivers from alienware for the WLAN card it has a whole bunch of options as well as its own power saving options.

ahhhhh ok, gotcha now. Its curious that WLAN shows like 95% signal strength but the network connection system icon says its low or very low.
