Vista Or Not? - Page 2

Honestly speaking. I think Vista is a little over rated, I mean all the fancy effects are copied from MacOSX and others. Secondly, there are lots of useless features that I don't need and it's there just to slow down my system. I mean, all the fancy fx is slow comparing to Linux Compiz + Xgl desktop. It'll smoke Vista up just like nothing.

DX10 sounds promising but I would love to have OpenGL compatible though cuz I still wanna play old games such as CStrike in OpenGL mode. With current Vista, u just can't do that.

I like the interface in XP though, and seems like it's the best OS that MS ever made.

Just my 2 cents.

I can run it!

If anything, I believe owner's of 9400s could slap-in the upcoming Merom core which supports the 64-bit instruction set along with other enhancements over Yonah. All we'll need is a bios update, from what I've been reading in other forums.

Definately not getting vista until i need it. Question tho, do you figure microsoft will let you upgrade from 32 vista to 64 vista, or do you think you will just have to buy the whole thing again. Cuz i just bought this core duo, and i dont plan on swapping it for a while.

The question on that is hard to answer myself. Before I had a duel boot with 2000 and XP Pro(will reformat to pro soon) and I use 2000 more cuz it was easy to make it work the way I wanted & well tweeking the look was easier without alot of programs in the backgroud, you know "it MY machine, not microsoft". But as time went on & got the 9300 I need to be even with both and moved on the xp being my main OS(I still miss 2000). From what a heard and saw Vista just doesn't scream wow to me and I agree on waiting for the first major service pack and if the security will be better than XP. So no vista for me.

I'm testing Beta2 build 5384 right now. It works fine on my M170. It found all my drivers but the sound and modem. The drivers for them on Dells Website worked fine. I had to install Dell quickset using Windows XP compatabiltiy mode cuz it errored saying that this OS was not supported. So far the only problem I noticed is when Font DPI is set to 120, I'm unable to make selections with the mouse cursor in MCE. Not a real biggie I can just use the remote and Alt+F4 to close the app.

I noticed that my 2.0 Gig dothan is getting pretty much getting worked. I notice that my CPU usage is pretty High. I also noticed vista seems to be about 30% slower than XP. I think Vista really needs a Dual Core CPU. Boy it would be nice if I can thrown in a Yonah. I got 2 gigs of memory and just running the OS, drivers and quickset installed I have 1.5 gb of free space. So just the OS alone eats 512MB easily.

I can't see any real reason to switch for a long time ( even as late as a couple of years), i can pretty much acomplish all that I need to do with XP.

If DX10 games are really that great ill probably just upgrade my desktop with a conroe and the next gen graphics card in 07 as i think notebooks are really going to struggle with vista early on.

More Digital rights management, more copy protection, openGL overlayed on D3D,less open source, sounds like a step backwards for the end user to me,or so I hear.

I may well get the 64 Bit version for my Dual Core AMD Optron.
and see how it goes on the Desktop first, I don't mind doing beta testing, did for XP 64 Bit OS with some painful results lol

I will definitely try to make the jump to the Duel Core 64 Bit for the Laptop when it comes out..hopefully
