XPS Gen2/M170 + 7900 GO/GTX It Fits With A Simple Mod But... - Page 9

I'm still giving this some attention, but I haven't found anything significative.

Is very difficult to interest the people that have the right skills with something like this.

Besides, the people with the right skills speak either russian or chinese, and I speak neither.
This reminds me of when someone tried to get the 6800U to fit in a 9300
or a mr9800 to fit in the 9100.

Good stuff.

*waits in anticipation for results*
*enjoys light show from XPSLights-Media Player plugin while waiting*

I was intrigued by that too.
I did about 20 minues of searching and could not find any pictures of the Sager 7900GTX. There are some of the Dell cards though in this thread even.
What I really means is Sagar might pick up the same board setup as Dell's card, but with different heatsink. What we can do is use Sagar card and Dell's heatsink together. Only if the video card is made of same factor. Maybe different is size.

I was looking at Sagar SLI lappy. Trying to find out the video card's shape. The connector look very similiar with Dell's connector... Oh well, more research I guess..

sigh .............

MXM form video cards should be interchangable
wut the hack is dell doing !

they broke their promises
there is no video cards upgrades available for XPS 170 damn ...
well, the 7800 was an upgrade

btw, doesn't the 7800/6800 heatsink fit on the 7900s?

Did dell ever promise an upgrade for the M170s specifically?
Maybe I missed it, as i was not paying attention to M170s as close at the time.

An XPS M170 is almost identical to an XPS Gen 2. The Name change was or marketing reasons because they were introducing the XPS M140 and wanted it associated with XPS. The XPS Gen 2 did have an upgrade which was from 6800U to 7800 GTX.

I can show a link where Dell promised "Graphics Upgrade" for XPS2. Do you have one that says Upgrade for M170? If so, then your right.
I think that the upgrade for the xps 2 was fufilled with the 7800gtx, but im not sure that they promised anything for the m170?
I dont think that they are going to resdesign the form factor of the 7900 series cards for a niche upgrade market like the on we fill, i would be nice but its not going to happen!
So its up to any kind person here who wants to help and i think that corn is flying the flag so thanks
post #176 of 382
they are abusing their power over the customers
If they want, 7900GTX will be compatable
They are both MXM PCIE interface
As Nvidia said they should be interchangable
7800GTX & 7900GTX basically are same generation cards
What is the only explanation that dell not making them interchangable?
I don't disaggree. Dell marketing is capable of something like that.

But the XPS and M170 are both Pentium M based systems.

The XPS M1710 are Core Duo based.
Therefore, there was a new MotherBoard designed. Its possible that the Graphics card form facter changed slightly because of the Motherboard change and Not to spite current owners.

I would bet that they did not do it on purpose, since it would gain them little to upset customers. Customer service is already horrible and they know this and bend over backwards to please people.

Instead I would bet that Incompetence, and/or lack of communication between engineering groups was more of the cause.

Oversite or Deliberate? Maybe a little bit of both.
We may never know.

MXM is desingned to be compatable once the PCIE slot is still the same
that is a revolution for laptop

the effort to give laptop users the right to upgrade their
video cards like desktop users

once the MB slot is still PCIE and compatable with MXM
the video card should not be an issue

if every time they change mother board or cpu
the video card will not be backwards compatable

then MXM is meaningless

what is the point?

I owned a Insprion 8000 before
its original video card was an GF2Go 32M
and it is not even MXM

i upgraded the video cards twice
Gf2Go 32M - Gf4Go440 64M - Radeon9000 64M

now the MXM form Mobile video card is a revolution
for all the NB users
the unbelievable thing is that there is only one upgrade

isn't that ridiculous?
