OK Guys, I have been following this thread and I accidentally stumbled upon a program that will unpack and edit the dell bios. Unfortunately I do not know how to edit it. The program is Heaventools PE Explorer http://www.heaventools.com/. It's a little tricky to get to the actual editing portion, but it will do it. If someone knows how to edit (and read) hex code then this may be the answer. Hope this helps and I will continue trying to figure it out.

^^

Is that just a hex editor? If it is, it ain't gonna do it.....

I'm really not sure what all it will do, but I was able to unpack the .exe file and extract the actual bios file. Then I decompressed the bios file to see the source code. It may not be able to do it, I just thought I would throw it out there.

^^

Anyone willing to give it a go?

Someone needs to contact the guy who use to do this and let them know that there is now an incentive.

come on , make it work !

I'll take a stab at it!

I think I might be able to do this with IDA PRO. I'll have to 'reverse engineer' the A05 version of the BIOS to understand what they are doing in the PCI bootstrap. Then of course, I'll have to reflash and test and debug and assemble and reflash and test..and so on.

Now I need to scrape up some money for a 7900GTX..honey, dear, is it OK if I buy a really pricey video card for that really expensive XPS GEN2 you bought me for my birthday? Rub your feet? Make a wish? Yes I know what day it is! It's Friday and that means you want sex! Oh the things I do for my Dell!

Need Feedback..

Can I remove the Heatsink/Heatpipe from my GEN2 6800 Ultra and mount it on a 7900GTX?

I really can't butcher my machine because it is got a long warranty period remaining and hope that someone has both modules and can compare the two.

Warming-up the dissassembler, but first I must service the wife!

Just wanted to chime in folks and let you all know that I am still here to offer my services since I have a Gen2/M170 & a M1710.

So if the bios wizards get somthing working I may be able to do some testing..

I can help the cause I still have my 6800 Ultra colecting dust in the box that my 7800 GTX came in when I upgraded my XPS Gen 2 . And I have the 7900 GTX in my current M 1710.

All you need to know is if the heatsink for the 6800 Ultra & 7900 GTX are the same? Why?

If you purchase a 7900 GTX it will come with the heatsink.

Am I missing somthing here?

But I will be more then glad to match the heatsinks up. If thats what you need ?

Jeff,

I believe he wants to swap the heatsinks so that he can do the mod w/o having to cut/solder the post of his lappy, like the OP stated. It is actually a great idea -- if it works

To motivate those who are working on this project, I'd like everyone to post how much they would actually give. Saying "I'll donate some" isn't a valid amount
