XPS Gen2/M170 + 7900 GO/GTX It Fits With A Simple Mod But... - Page 17

The heatsinks PHYSICALLY fit between the two cards, but the form factor of the two cards is different. There is a post hole on the upper right hand side of the two cards that is part of the actual PCB, this hole is about 1/4 inch different on each of the cards, not just the heatsink.

I received a 7800GTX, built for a E1705/9400 system by mistake two weeks ago, instead of the one for my modded 9300. I did transfer the heatsink from my 6800ULTRA to it, but as I stated, the PCB of the cards are different. No benefit to swapping out the heatsink.

by the way, the 7900GTX and the 7800GTX for the M1710/E1705/9400 have the exact same form factors. I hope this helps.

Pictures..Please!

Can anyone post pictures of both sides of a 7900GTX?

I'm discouraged if the only way to proceed is to desolder the post (and void my warranty).

Crap! There's always a roadblock to my dreams, and in this case it is a small itsie-bitsie metal post..bitch!!!

Johnny, I would think the pics of the 7800 at the beginning of this thread would suffice. The 7800 pictured is from a 9400 and has the same form factor as the 7900 GTX--minus a heatpipe. Yes, you do need to do something with the post. However, if you are semi-decent with solder, you can always solder the post back on, should a warranty situation arise.

something new ???

Sort Of...

I've got a few ideas ready to try..

I'm now searching to get a M170 motherboard and a 7900GTX before I 'brick' my main (warrantied) system.

Wish me luck!

Johnny,

Why a 7900 GTX, why not try anything that fits in an M170 or 9300 but is not compatible with the current BIOS? You could use a 7900 GS. Heck, you might even be able to test it using an X1400 from a 9400. There's probably a lot more people willing to donate one of those babies to science. That way you can at least know if your experiment works.

7900gs :)

That's a good idea, 7900GS are way cheaper than a 7900GTX.

I love it when people collaborate and exchange ideas like this!

welll dont use the ati X1400 it wont work, the motherboard that uses the X1400 is different then the standard 9400 motherboard the x1400 is detachable but the two mobos are different

bump that

This took too long, I ended up just giving up on this and picked up a M1710 with the 7900 GTX But Core 2 Duo, makes it very worthwhile.

Ugh.

Sounds like the end to me...

Bump. Please get a 7900 GTX to work in my 9300! :P

Update..

I'm slowly acquiring parts for a secondary set-up. Picked up a gig of memory (cheap) and a hardrive/caddy (also cheap). I'm on the lookout for a motherboard/cpu (cheap of course) and that 7900GTX (won't be cheap!)

At this rate I might pull it off by XMAS.

Thank-you that is very kind, but I feel it would be inappropriate to accept anything from members of the community. However, if Dell wants to set me up with a nice embedded development platform for this older XPS generation and bless this effort to extend the lifecycle (and useability) and of course absolve me from legal implications for 'hacking' their BIOS..wonderful!

Right now, I have a friend who's friend works in a Dell repair depot and is trying to get me one of those 'marginal' MB just for testing with.

Come on this would never work. Dell isn't worried about letting us get more usability out of their systems, they're interested in keeping us coming back for more and more computers.
