Dell 5150 vs 6400

Ok - so after 2 years of multiple comp crashes(3 Hds, 3 Motherboards, faulty AC Adapters, 1 non-working optical drive) Dell has decided to send me a replacement for my Inspiron 5150. The replacement is an Inspiron 6400. (I hope i posted this in the right forum).

Can you guys tell me if these specs are comparable to each other?

Inspiron 5150 that I have
- P4 3.06 GHz
- 15" UXGA, Ultra Sharp
- 1 Gb Ram
- 8x DVD + RW
- 60 GB HD
- Nvidia GeForceFx Go 5200

In the mail
Inspiron 6400
- 15.4" WXGA (I'm concerned that this wont be as good as my UXGA)
- 1 Gb Ram (Equivalent)
- Intel `1.83 Duo Core (How does this compare to my 3.06 ?)
- 8x DVD + RW (Equivalent)
- 80 Gb HD (Memory doesnt matter to me)
- Ati 128 MB (Its not Nvidia )

So how do you think these machines compare? Will the replacement be as powerful as my Inspiron 5150? I'd really appreciate any comments thanks - b/c I have been so frustrated with Dell.

The screens are definately not equivalent...

I've done a lot of tests with my T2300 (1,66 GHz) to compare it with (old) P4 Desktop-CPUs.

Singlethreaded Software (1 Core): Similar fast as a P4 2,8 GHz

Multithreaded Software (Use of Dual Core, e.g. Nero Recode): As fast as a theoretical P4 4,8 GHz (Single Core).

with the exception of the screens.

that 6400 will knock the sox off the 5150.

Ok kewl - so other than the screen thing its much better?
Is the screen going to be noticeably different - I do work as a graphic artist - will I notice a big change?

to be honest they kinda skimped on your screen. WXGA isn't that high a resolution, well, compared to 1600x1200. I went from a UXGA screen in my i8200 to a WSXGA in my D820 and I'm not missing UXGA at all. But I would miss the UXGA if I downgraded to the WXGA screen, in my opinion that is.

I know the video you are getting isn't nVidia, but trust me, it's miles better than the FX5200 in your 5150.

Resolution is a personal thing, WXGA would be completely unacceptable for me. I know it seems nice of them to be sending you a much newer system but I would be pushing for a higher resolution LCD.

Just so you know, You are going from 1600x1200 down to 1280x800.

If your dud notebook had UXGA, insist on WUXGA on your replacement.

They dont have the WUXGA on the E1505. I would make them give you a WSXGA at least. A regular WXGA will in no way compare to your old one! I wouldnt even open the new one when it comes and get them to send you one with the better screen.

Yes it is nice, but it isnt nice that I lost all my files and settings 2x, before I became smart enough to back it ALL up. And also, the amount of times I've sent it into depot and not had it working add up to over a month and a half. And now - I've been computerless since the beginning of March - since the 5150 was returned to me from the Depot still not working. But, I must admit I'm suprised they're replacing it for me since my warranty ends come October 06.

I'll keep you updated

Just a quick update - if anyone cares.
I got my laptop now - the 6400 and they have upgraded my monitor to a WUXGA - glad to have gotten rid of that glary SXGA. Anyways, I'm happy that I am back in businesss with a laptop - but I'm still not convinced that this 1.6 duo-core is quicker than my 3.06 5150; the new one seems laggier. As well I'm not keen on widescreen monitors - but this does alright.
Anyhow, thx for all the advice.

Isn't the WUXGA screen the 1680x1050 glossy screen that comes with the E1505? And the E1505(Home) = 6400(Small business)

Ya, the Dell dude got me a new monitor and had it installed - took out the other. I guess its meant for Latitudes mainly.

First of all I had almost the exact same done for me, except that I went to a 6000 then to a 6400. And yes it is A LOT better then the 5150.

and you said that your warranty is done in october 2006, if i were you, i would add 1 year extended to it because if something goes boom on it, your screwed.

So give Dell a call and see if you cannot get a good discount for all the trouble you have gone through, like FREE extended warranty, and btw I got a free extra year warranty.
