7900GS Dual Pipe Install in E1705

First, I take no responsibility if you screw up your computer - DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK (even though it is very little)...I am a complete noob and this is my first mod. Installation of the 7900GS with the dual pipe in the E1705 was a 'snap' (no pun intended.... bad joke). OK...

First, go to dell.com and print out all the service manuals for optical drive, keyboard, hinge cover, lcd monitor, and palm rest...these instructions are very clear and have nice pics. Read them a couple times before starting so you know what you are getting into to....

Second, get an Nvidia driver and download it to your computer.
Third, uninstall all the ATI stuff (or old Nvidia stuff) using Add/Remove Programs
Fourth, run drivercleaner pro to remove anything left of the old driver
Fifth, reboot computer in normal fashing to complete uninstallation.

Before starting physical work, have a very small phyllip head screwdriver, lay out the 'screw identification sheets' from Dell website found in 'Before you work on your computer') - I used these to tape the screws to while working (they are tini and will disappear), have a pair of very small tweasers (used to grab some resessed screws), pair of needle nose pliars and a pair of 'breaking the tabs pliars' and a small plastic 'spatula like thing' (used to remove hinge cover), masking tape and a flashlight (to help look into some holes to make sure you got all the screws out). That should be all you need.

Now for physical work...follow steps outlined by Dell to the T. They are very clear and easy. I used needle nose pliers to GENTLY remove any connectors. They all pull straight up except the monitor cable which simply rests in place and is released when the tab is rotated up using a fingernail.

To remove the metal walls (which are very brittle) I simply used wire cutter type pliers that have a flat surface (used to crimp wires). I used masking tape to tape off everything around the walls like it was getting ready for surgery (it is). Patiently clip off small parts of the metal walls (it breaks off easily) until you get enough clearance). Use a couple strips of masking tape to remove metal debris. Take off masking tape used to protect everthing.

Put in new card (make sure the 2nd heat pipe is 'snapped' down all the way or the palm rest will not sit correctly). Put everything back together, boot up normal and install new Nvidia driver. Ready to rock. The pics in the 7900GTX in E1705 are exactly correct.....

MCF did you install a dual pipe 7900GS into your 1705? I just did the same and if you see from my past thread it did absolutely nothing for my 3dmark05, still at 3500. Did you see an increase?

maybe you got a re-branded bootleg 7900gs that is actually a 7800, =X

I never did a 3DMARK05 test on ATI1400....I just ran the trial version twice and got 5877 and 5889....not bad, but can be increase, I know it....just from playing games, I do see a pretty good increase in performance, but not as much as I want. I know some people are getting around 7500 with OCing...I am hoping bumping my RAM from 1GB to 2GB will help some as well..

I'm posetive I didn't get a bootleg card. I'm going to put the card in my 1710 tonight to see if it's a problem with the card or the system, if it's the card I think I can get it replaced.

Your nvidia control panel setting is mostlikey @ default-which is quality over performance. You can change the settings when you are running the 3dmark (just to see the increase in performance, and put it back to quality when you are playing games). There are 2 places I change those settings 1-control panel 2-right click desktop/(Display)properties/settings/advanced/click on 7900 options and you will see same options again. I change them at both because for some reason, they don't interact w/ another w/ those settings. Anyways, that should boost up about 4-500 points on 3dmark05. GL.

I will try that...but what is the use of getting a higher score with lower settings if you run normally at the higher settings. Also, the run is at 1024x768 and I run much higher resolutions when gaming....I got COD2 to run pretty good at 1280 x 1024 and getting around 125fps, but I still get an occasional quarter second 'hiccup' (freeze) once in a while...any thoughts. I will post 3DMARK05 scores with 'performance' setting and see what happens.

with performance settings and 1024x768..got 6410...that sounds more like it...but still want to get up around 7000....that will be good enough for me. Thanks!

No, you test it only for benchmark purposes. When you are actually playing the games you play, you set it up as high as it can handle.
You won't get to 7k unless you OC. Just for reference I had close to 6500 w/ no OC. I got 7780 or 7790 ish score w/ OC.
