Man, alot of people are having problems with Dells screens

Hope everything works out for you! Reppage!

Why doesn't Dell just spend some extra money, and put this problem to rest for good already...?

Its funny you say that, because my tech first said the LG's were amung the best in the business, but the Samsungs were better--- but more expensive.

I'm not going to fault Dell for trying to save a buck or two--- 9 out of 10 people would think I'm crazy for finding fault in this display and could care less about the issue. I'm just nerd #10...

Haha, I hear you man - you deserve to be completely satisfied with your laptop, keep returning those washed out/leaking LCDs!

I am really surprised to hear about the problems with the screens as well. I had a Gen2 laptop and I have never seen a screen as crisp and vibrant as that! Well, good luck to everyone that is having problems with there screens!

Tech came out tonight to replace the screen, but the same backlight issues are present. No dead pixels, but there is also a distinct darkness in the lower right part of the screen.

I had to take a call when the screen was out of the unit, but what little I saw led me to believe that the display is totally self contained, backlight and all. Rather odd to see two displays with the same problem render nearly the same backlight issue.

Called Dell support and asked for another display. The tech initially wanted to replace my video card, saying that two bad displays with the same results must be something else. I respectfully disagreed, and eventually he sent out both a new video card and a new display. May have it by Friday.

One thing I'll point out is that the support person was sharp and logical in their assessment of the problem, I'll give them credit. I knew the problem is the display, but from their perspective I can understand why they didn't want to send a new one. Just keep that in mind when others talk to the folks on the phone.

So, the saga continues...

There seems to be some confusion as to the difference between the Samsungs because of the different resolutions offered. I might be wrong, someone correct me if I am, but...

For Widescreen XGA+, Samsung seems to be the best brand LCD, with LG Philips not being that great.
For Widescreen UXGA, LG Philips seems to be better with color quality and light leakage than the Samsungs.

There's more brands that Dell uses for WXGA+, but for WUXGA, it's Samsung and LG Philips only.

Actually SHARP also make a WUXGA 17 inch screen for the E1705. One other guy that had display problems posted on another thread. He got a matte screen Sharp which later was replaced with a glossy Screen sharp. The funny thing they both were the same exact model number only one was glossy and the other matte. He posted pics of them side by side. BIG DIFFERENCE. He still isn't happy with the second screen he got but it is an improvement over the matte screen he received.
I have the same problem. Matte Samsung Screen Model SEC5557
Very disapointed with the picture quality. I mean it's okay for a mill of the road laptop but not for a supposedly Ultra Bright Truelife WUXGA screen.
I think they should buy the screens from HP or Sony and not skimp on the screen which is the biggest part of your laptop.

Hmm, my bad. Saw the Sharp thread but didn't read it.

I can say that after working on this Samsung WXGA+ screen for a few hours now that I'd rather have my old LG back. Coloring issues aside, its just "not right".

AMEN! But what can you do. Keep exchanging the Screen until you get the one that you want? I downloaded a HD video demo from Nvidia to convince me that the screen isn't that bad but I was not thrilled with the results.
I really don't like this Samsung Screen. Now I haven't seen the LG but from what I read it must be the better of the 3 screens that they offer. Of course I may complain and then get stuck with the Sharp screen which from what I read is even worse. What do to, What to do..

Well... here I am on screen #3. Another Samsung, a brand new one. It is certainly better than the last one (which was really horrible after looking at it a while). The coloring is better, a bit more even (like the LG) but the light leakage is still bad.

I keep taking digital pictures, and from my camera display it appears the leakage is half way up the screen. Makes me wonder if I'm doing that right.

The tech also replaced the video card and cable. No surprise there is no change there.

Delima time. I suppose I could call support and ask for another screen. Part of me wants to ask for a replacement system, but I want to keep this system until it arrives then swap the HD. However, I'd likely receive it after my 21 days are over and may loose a bargaining chip for future LCD exchanges.

I could certainly "get used" to this, but I'm far from thrilled. I was expecting to be wow'd.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Recommendations?

I am in the same boat. I haven't had them replace the screen yet but after hearing your story, those screens don't seem to get much better. I am far from thrilled or wowed with the screen. I have seen better screens on much cheaper laptops. I really like Video card and all the other internals in the laptop, I just don't like this crappy screen. Why put out a kick ass product and then save on the most important part. It's like putting a Honda engine into a Corvette. Okay, maybe that might be an improvement... I don't know ... Anyway, I decided to return the laptop. Sure, I could live with it but why should I. It isn't that cheap and for that kind of money I want a decent screen. My screen has light leakage on the right side only. It goes up the entire height of the screen. Also the sparkles or whatever you call it are totally unacceptable. This Dell is going back.

I have this same problem on my LG Philips WXGA+ screen. There is also a form of "light banding" where the movement of the head or screen seems to move this brighter portion around the screen...

Have been debating about whether to seek replacement screen... worried that I may get an even worse screen.... what should I do???

It is possible to get a good display. Mine has some light leakage, and by some the bottom inch or so appears a little grey with a perfectly black background, which is really more an issue with the physics of light than a manufacturer problem. Zero dead pixles, and a color and contrast that puts LCD TVs to shame. It's the kind of screen that when people see the laptop, the first thing they say is "Oh my god, that display is amazing". So it's possible.

So what is the magic word we need to use to get such a Fantastic Screen.
My Viewsonic Desktop LCD is 100 times better than the higher resolution Dell WUXGA screen with True Life and my Sony 55 inch HDTV LCD TV screen is 1,000,000 times better or more than the Dell screen. They are not even fit to be in the same room together. I have looked at laptops at Compusa and Best Buys and their lesser screens blow my top of the line Dell screen away. When I saw a Sony Vaio with their glossy screen I did stay and say WOW, now that screen is HD Quality and I would be proud of that screen. Now if I could have that screen with the internals of the Dell I would be a happy camper.

I just came back from a conference at Microsoft in Washington DC and saw plenty of laptop screens with the "wow" factor. Yes, this screen is getting replaced (or the whole system is); if Toshiba, Sony, and Gateway can have a better looking screen, so can Dell.

Just called and warranty support is sending me a brand new machine, which is the best I can hope for at this point.

On an interesting side note, I should have it by mid week. Guess they can express these replacements ahead of regular orders. So I guess I'm to blame is one poor sap gets their system a day late.

Here's a few bananas for the new machine...

I know I didn't offer bananas when I got mine. Maybe the gods of laptops frown upon idolatry?

Never thought of it that way. In which case...

(whatever works!)

So is anyone happy with the E1705 screens? I was about to pull the trigger but you guys have scared me away.

I wasn't blown away by the demo model at the Dell Direct Store, but it was pretty good. I didn't have DVD access, and it was likely an older LCD.

What is the verdict on these things? Is anyone happy with them?
