Incoming! My E1705 - Page 3

I think a dose of caution is warranted with the current batch of screens. Yes, there are plenty of folks who have perfect screens, but unfortunately we don't always hear from them so there is no way to know if this is isolated or wide spread.

My replacement system will be here later this week or early next, so that will be a point of compairson.

One thing I will say in favor of Dell, they are trying to take care of me. 3 screen replacements, video card replacement, replacing the whole system.

And screen aside (which I am slowly getting used to), this box is a screaming demon!

Totally agreed. Even though I'm having some issues with my LG WXGA+ screen on my E1705, I still love this laptop because it is powerful. uclajd, just remember that what had happened to us in terms of bad screens may not happen to you if you're buying one... furthermore, there are many people out there who have perfect screens who didn't talk about them in this forums...

I have the Samsung and LG Phillip side by side, it appear the LG is darker and much better looking in color. the Samsung is too bright and have a little light leak on the bottom, the color seem to be waste out a bit on the Samsung

What warranty plan did you get? How are you handling the shipping?

Yeah, the overclocked benches are shocking to me. I never thought lappys could put out those kind of numbers. It's actually pretty sad that some guys with Go 7900 GS's are beating my old 5+GHz Pentium desktop 6800GT under -80c phase change! Hmmm, I wonder what the Go 7900 GS could do at -80C?

When I get an E1705 it will be especially fast when I drop a Merom in it.

I wasn't blown away by the demo model at the Dell Direct Store, but it was pretty good. I didn't have DVD access, and it was likely an older LCD.

What is the verdict on these things? Is anyone happy with them?

Pit against laptops by Sony and Fujitsu, they suck hard. However, in general I'd rate them around 7.5/10. Sony and Fujitsu I'd rank 10/10.

I have 3 year onsite nights and weekends with complete care, so the tech is coming out to my place to do the replacement. This may still be an option in your first 21 days.

My machine is screaming even without overclocking!!!

New box arrives tomorrow...

Came home for lunch and the FedEx guy appeared shortly thereafter. Turned it on and saw some LL again, but after doing a side-by-side the new screen looks a lot better. Will leave it on Undead Pixel rotate for the rest of the afternoon and see what it looks like this evening.

While LL was noticable, the colors looked more like they should, which leads me to believe it is another manufacturer. Will check that as well. And will try to take pictures to compare.

Off the cuff, looks like an improvement!

Would like to know more about the screen on your new E1705 replacement.

Haha, I wonder who anonymously - rep'd me for my post in this thread. Even if you're going to do it anonymously, at least provide a reason.

OKAY!

After playing with the replacement I've decided its a keeper. There is still LL, no question about it but compared to the other system this is a better looking display. Colors are more even. LL is most noticable on a black screen only, which is a major improvement over the other screens.

Went to Dell's online site to have its software inspect the configuration. Here is what it came back for a manufacturer--- neither LG, Samsung, or Sharp???

LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, WXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., AU OPTRONICS CORP

I still hope to take some pictures for everyone's reference, but that won't be until the weekend.

On a side note, had a little fun with the new machine migrating things over. I figured the easiest way was to simply swap the hard drive. It was the easiest, except for the fact that I was unable to reconnect to my wireless network. Had to uninstall and reinstall the Intel software to make it work.

I'm wondering if I need to tell Dell I swapped the drives, as they were separate manufacturers (Seagate vs. Hitachi).

If I'm not wrong, the blacks are black & the whites are white right? I have an AUO LCD screen on my 700m and have to say that it was awesome... My E1705's LG screen was just no match for my perfect no LL AUO screen on my 700m.... maybe the current batch of E1705 are using the AUO screens???

Congrats on your system... Wonder when Dell will be AUO replacement screens in their inventory....

File this under karma or useless trivia, but my original ship date was tomorrow the 16th....

Well, here we are a week later. I'd love to say that I'm thrilled with the replacement machine but I'm not. Tried convincing myself the light leakage at the bottom won't bother me but it does. Hair that broke it was when I loaded up KOTOR 2--- all the space scenes were washed out, unless I turned the brightness all the way down.

So it is my intention to return it. HOWEVER, this is my 21st day and when I called, the EPP customer care department is CLOSED! I called back and got through to someone in the home department, and he logged it as a case. Whether or not it gets honored is anyone's guess. Going to try and call in first thing tomorrow and see if they will honor it.

For a replacement system I am looking at the HP dv8000t with a brightview screen. The GPU, the 7600, is about half as powerful as the 7900 (3dmark05 wise), but its still 100x better than my old ATI 9600. And I'm not quite the gamer I once was. But their screen is incredible, more like a sony.

Call this my Harold and Kumar moment, I am not willing to settle and want exactly what I want; a perfect LCD. Who cares how powerful the GPU is if the screen looks bad.

Story continues...

Got me double thinking on the 1705 as I was thinking about one for the better GPU options than the Hp's.

Currently have a HP dv8000t that has a pretty nice screen on it. Colors look rich, not washed out looking...

Continuing my saga...

Dell treated me well today. I was on day 22 of my trial period, but because I called last night they didn't have an issue taking it back. No restocking fees, and they will refund everything including shipping. I'll give them extra credit for very good customer service.

I'm a bit sad to send this machine back, but I know the screen issues will drive me crazy and I'll regret not doing it. I know some folks have said that LL can get better, and that most LCD have LL of some sort or another.

My plan is to pick up a HP dv8000t with their Ultrabrite screen. Seen it at Costco and CompuUSA, and it looks *fantastic*. Know those machines have some issues, but what brand doesn't in one form or another. The nice thing is if I dislike the HP, I have a 6 month no-hastle return policy...

Delphi if you wanted a perfect laptop screen you should've gone for a Sony or Fujitsu.

I briefly looked at Sony, and from what I've seen on the HP I may be getting the exact same screen for a lot less $... We'll see.

Curious...

How much would a Sony or Fujitsu system with the same spec's as the HP dv8000t like delphigreg spec'd above go for?
