Ok, Don't kill the massenger! Although the factory is set to ship F5000 later this month. Initial shipment will not be heading to the U.S. Looks like Europe and Asia may see this first. U.S. Shipment will be sometime in July.

Well, that about seals it for me then. I guess I get the 8204 and then pop a Merom in there eventually...

Looks like either a Dell M1210 or a Sony SZ for me after all then.

How about trying out that Asus w3j instead of the dell or sony:

It has almost the same 3Dmark score as the 8204, but its lighter with no webcam.

I will never understand people who try to compare completely different notebooks for different purposes.

For only $200 less, the Asus has:

* Core Duo T2400 instead of Core Duo T2500
* 14" WXGA instead of 15.4" WSXGA
* 1GB of RAM instead of 2GB
* 100GB HDD instead of 120GB HDD
* Optional Bluetooth instead of standard Bluetooth
* VGA only instead of VGA and DVI ports
* 3 USB ports instead of 4 USB ports
* No PC card slot instead of Type-II PC card slot
* 5 instant launch keys instead of 4 instant launch keys
* No webcam instead of webcam built in
* No Bluetooth phone instead of bundled Bluetooth phone
* 83-key instead of 88-key keyboard
* No physical switches for WLAN / Bluetooth, vs. physical switches for both
* 34mm less wide, 24mm less deep, but 6.4mm thicker
* 4.4lbs with 4-cell or 4.9lbs with 8-cell, vs. 6.6lbs with 9-cell battery

So, yes - it is smaller and lighter (although that's because it has a significantly smaller screen, which you failed to mention). However, you also get a *lot* less for your money, including some items that will be show-stoppers for many of us (no PC card, no DVI).

Yes, the Asus W3J is probably a good laptop for some people - but it is not a rival to the Acer 8204WLMi by any level of comparison.

Because the previous post said "looks like either the Dell 1210 or Sony SZ for me...". Probably referring to the 12" ferrari.

Each of those laptops means a major reduction in performance beacuse of the GPU in exchange for smaller size. The W3J offers equal performance to the larger 8200 while still offering smaller size. If the W3J had dual-link DVI output it would be just about perfect.

a) why would he reply in such a manner to a post saying that the 5000 will ship late, if he was planning to buy the 1000?

b) 3DMark is only a small part of the story. I highly doubt that with a slower processor and half the RAM, that the W3J is "equal" to the 8200. Spec it equally on processor and RAM and it'll be more expensive.

c) "Just about perfect" for your uses, maybe - in which case the 8204 was never in the running. I listed a large number of major differences between these two machines. They're simply not aiming for the same market.

Ok. Well in no way did I say that the asus w3j is a rival to the 8204. I just said that you get almost as good of a performance as the 8204.

He listed smaller type laptops, so I figured he was interested in something that is smaller. I was looking at the Sony SZ series for awhile, which to me is a pretty cool little system, but I want something that has more graphics power. That is why I am going to wait for the new ferrari. I just figured if he couldn't wait for the ferraris to come out... he could take a look at the asus, which is a smaller type laptop that, to me, beats out the sony.

Quite right, I am looking for the smaller Ferrari 1000 to come out the same time as the 5000. Dropped into a CompUSA yesterday and played with not only the SZ-230 (where I am they have wireless WAN to my surprise) but the Sony TX and the Apple Macbook. All of these units were cool running compared to the Apple 15" Macbook Pro, which seemed overly warm.

The TX will be going Duo Core eventually and hopefully soon:

One great thing about my present ultraportable Sony T250 is that I can take it anywhere in a shoulder strapped case and it will not scream "I am a laptop".

I may have the fortitude to wait till the beginning of July for the Ferrari 1000. At the moment I think the SZ is the most tempting though for my needs; it has both PC and Expresscard slots, yet I know the larger size is the only drawback. Time will tell.

Acer announced the 2 Ferrari's the first day of Computex, and Computex is now over. The prices and availability will be announced within the next 2 weeks.

The 1000 looks amazing, but the 1150...I'm really not liking the Radeon Xpress 1150 though. Do u think they'll throw in HD-DVD as an option for this one too?
post #76 of 165
*drools* 5000.....*keeps on drooling...*

F5000 looks nice and I may pick one up... Gave up on the 4000 a couple months back because it was too noisy (no, it wasn't a hardware defect)! I hope the thermal parameters on the new X2 mobilities are better.

One question about the HD-DVD drive - does this mean there's no writing capability or is this drive still DVD-RW/DL capable?
post #78 of 165
I wouldn't get an HD-DVD drive so soon. You pay a huge premium to get it at release, theres barely any content existant for them unless you make your own, and the burning speeds are terrible. If you wait even as short as 1 year after the release to get a nextgen drive the speeds will have quadrupled and the price will be significantly lower. The blank media will be expensive, you'll need a standalone player for your tv which will be priced through the roof. That's just my opinion, I would stick with the DVD drive and by the time you need HD-DVD it will be time for a new laptop anyways.

I cant wait for the new Ferrari to be available in stores... Where's the Adam Sandler Click It remote thingy when you need it....

Very cool looking laptop.
I'm still mostly happy with my 3200. I wish I had a true docking station/port replicator for it.
The good thing with the 5000 being released is that the 4006 will get "firesale" pricing.
