Suse 9.0 on a gateway m675x

Well I just got my Gateway m675x and have installed SuSE 9.0 on it.

Things that work:

1)Have native resolution working with hardware acceleration using the radeon drivers which can be downloaded from the suse website. Just followed the instructions provided by suse. Do not use the rpm's from ATI, they don't seem to work well with suse.

2)Memory card reader seems to work if I have the memory card in when I boot. Putting the card in after boot does not work. This seems normal since my desktop computer exhibits the same behavior with a PQI Travel Flash SD reader.

3)Haven't tried DVD burning yet, but the burner is recognized and K3b seems to have the option to burn a dvd. Dvd playing works great after installing the appropriate decryption software.

4)synaptics touchpad works pretty good. The virtual scroll wheel is working fine but I cannot get the actual scroll wheel to work. Anyone know how to get this to work? The touchpad is also too sensitive. Barely brushing it moves the cursor. Anyone know how to adjust this in XF86Config?

4)Usb works, parallel port works.

What doesn't work:

1)The sound card does not work. It is autodected as a "82801EB AC'97 Audio Controller". Not sure if this is correct but I get no sound from the built in speaker and no sound from external speakers. I have checked to make sure everything is unmuted in kamix.

2)ACPI causes the computer to shutdown immdiately after boot. Have to boot with "acpi=off". Of course this means to suspend and closing the lid does nothing. Would appreciate any help with this.

Integrated ethernet also works. Haven't tried wireless yet.

Ok, partially works now. I had to stop the thermal module from being loaded as that is what was causing the shutdown. The fans seem to turn on and off ok. Battery status monitor works. The screen dims when running on battery like it should. Don't know if suspend and resume work.

Couple of things I would appreciate help with:

1) Any suggestions to get the thermal module working

2) For anyone that has linux running on this laptop does your sound work. If so, are you using alsa and what module are you loading.

3) How can I adjust the touch sensitivity of the touchpad. My hand keep brushing it while typing.

4) How can I get the scroll wheel below the touchpad to work?

The relavant section of my XF86Config looks like:

"InputDevice"
Driver "synaptics"
Identifier "Mouse[1]"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.0010"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Edges" "1900 5400 1800 3900"
Option "Finger" "25 30"
Option "InputFashion" "Mouse"
Option "MaxSpeed" "0.18"
Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
Option "MaxTapTime" "20"
Option "MinSpeed" "0.02"
Option "Name" "Synaptics;Touchpad"
Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

The scroll buttons for the touchpad should work with the driver here:

http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/

When you're brushing the touchpad, it's probably registering it as a tap-to-click event. You can set MaxTapTime to 0 to disable it. Or you can set MaxTapMove to 0 to disable single finger taps, but leave 2 and 3 finger taps working.

I don't have the same laptop as you, but if you post the output of "lspci -v | grep -i 'audio'" I can tell you which alsa module to use.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "thermal module." (I'm not too familiar with suse) Do you mean the acpi thermal zone?

That is the module I am talking about. If I load that module, the computer immediately shuts down.

Regarding the sound card. lspci -v | grep 'audio' identifies the sound controller as "Intel Corp. 82801EB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)". I could not find much usefull information about support for this chip by ALSA with a google search. I'm not sure if it is supported or not.
You want the intel8x0 sound driver. (Or in alsa terms, snd-intel8x0)

I don't really know what's up with the thermal zone module, but I know that I have it and all the rest of acpi compiled right into the kernel, and nothing shows up in my thermal zone. You might have a buggy DSDT.

Ok, turns out sound was sort of working all along. The sound output is being directed to the mic input jack. Plugging speakers into this jack will produce sound. Still can't get the built in speakers to work. This is supposed to be a six channel audio controller and the function performed by the three jacks varies depending on what is plugged in. I guess the alsa module is unable to deal with this (?) or something like that.

well, someone has submitted a patch to fix this. It is included in a recent kernel. Anyway, details are here:

Can you post your whole XF86Config please?

Thanks.

I have the same laptop and will be installing SuSE 9.1 on it today. I ran the SuSE live cd last night only to find the same problems with the video resolution being in 640x480 and no sound. Have not tried out wireless yet.
