NP 5620: Blue Screens, Reboots, Freeze on Boot, Non-Boot

Hi

Without warning my Sager NP5620 started to malfunction. While being used in Windows XP SP2, a blue screen (with some messages that went by too quickly to be read) suddenly appeared and the machine rebooted. A few minutes after re-starting, the blue screen re-appeared but this this, there was no reboot. The screen just went blank and all activtity (except for some some low fan noise) ceased.

I manually turned the power off and turned it on about a minute later. However, about midway through outputting the BIOS messages to the screen, the the boot process froze. Once again, I manually powered off the laptop and turned it on again some moments later. This time though, the BIOS messages did not even appear. The screen just remained blank. The hard drive light just came on and went off almost immediately and nothing else occurred. Further attempts at powering on the laptop yielded the same result - no BIOS message, no bootup and no activity whatsoever.

The following day, I tried again. This time the laptop booted up ok and I was able to get into Windows. However, about 2 minutes after logging into my account, the blue screen and the messages (flashed by too quickly to be read) re-appeared. The result after this was quite similar to what has been explained above. The machine would boot-up sometimes, then blue screen, hang during the BIOS output messages during boot-up and finally, fail to bootup altogether.

I have been able to rule out a Windows or hard-drive problem. I have a second hard drive which I tried with a fresh Windows XP installation. The result was the same pretty much the same as described above. It is quite possible therefore that the problem is hardware (non-hard drive) based.

Has anyone experienced this fault on their laptop or can let me know what the problem is? I would also be grateful, if anyone can direct me to a good laptop repair/service center in the UK in and around the Huddersfield/Leeds/Manchester regions. Email me at jazz.e@virgin.net if company names cannot be mentioned here.

Notebook specs: Sager NP5620, Pentium 4 2.00Ghz, 512 MB RAM DDR 2100, 40 GB 5400 RPM HDD

When my system exhibited those symptoms, it turned out to be the video card had failed. I can't help you with repair places over there, sorry.

Thanks for replying M8. How easy/difficult is it to replace the graphics chip? Is it something that can be done by a user who is comfortable with upgrading PC's or are specialist tools and skills needed?

Cheers

Unfortunately you have to replace the whole board. The GPU is soldered to the main board. You may try contacting Sager and see if they have a recommended repair depot in the UK.
